They were never explicitly shown to get together, but everything leading up to that point strongly indicates they would have.
And it was never primarily a romance story anyway. It was about two characters who, up until the ending, wouldn't have felt like they deserved other people's friendship let alone romance (though again, there were hints of the beginning romantic feelings). How an actual romance between them would have developed is a different story altogether. You can use your imagination.

But y'all like your plotlines to be summed up in one word, so if it gets labelled a "romance" manga, then people get bitchy when it doesn't tick off everything on the "romance" checklist.
(Did the first chapter or the one-shot seem especially romantic at all?)

For the record: Though I appreciate the overall arc it was going for as well as the presentation, I do think the ending was kind of trite. Everything wrapped up very neatly very quickly for my tastes, especially considering how long it spends dwelling on them in the middle.
But even if I didn't love the ending, comments like yours still piss me off. It's the same shit every time whenever a story is even remotely romantic.
