There's some potential in the 'conclusion' the author is talking about in the blurb at the end they kindly translated.
The author has actually sold James as having a good deal of attachment to Lily in the previous chapter and amity in the first two. Sort of does it again here throwing his witty character on the backburner for an uncomfortably serious James and his... delirious... jealousy, but the author doesn't actually seem too big a fan of his own character in his blurbs and James is an incredibly horrible weird old sadist anyways at face value.

Jan is taking direct advantage of a trait that made Lily so embarrassed she was afraid of holding a job in a way that is unexpectedly worse than what James does by, possibly without her knowledge, selling her milk. Jan actually started this immediately after his encounter with her and made a deal with the peddler (One of AT's mascots, but don't be fooled she only looks similar to Lily) that sold Jan the brooch that you can see on Lily's collar, got mixed signals. The author mocked Jan in the first two, turned around afterwards, yet didn't do much for his character. The urchin might turn out to be an outrageously scummy opportunist, or not at all as his true personality is now up in the air thanks to the image change between chapters.

Then again might be giving them too much credit and I'm sure I've read into this too much, neither of their male characters have proven stellar guys anyways. Depending on how strong he finishes a very charming romance can top off this series with either outcome along with the promised chocolate, but its all on how well they do it and how they decide to close off this lovely three, maybe four year long series.
