never understood it either. sure, shes physically cute (shorthaired girls are my favorite, but then nabiki is cuter and her hairstyle is better) and shes a tomboy, the type of girl i like the most. but i dont like violent tomboys. plus she cant cook for shit (which i can but still, having your girl cook you something EDIBLE is magical)

Holy crap it got translated. Instant favorite.

Though I have to admit the lovey dialogue for both of them is a bit odd. It does feel like the series is missing context.

Also anybody disparging Akane's hotness needs to actually read Ranma 1/2 and not just take Ranma's tsundere lies at face value.

Ranma never found Akane hot, he just imprinted on her as a puppy because she asked him to be her friend. Also you forget the actual morals and ideas Rumiko is trying to force down our throats. There are several of them in fact, many if not all explained to us by Genma. For instance:

1. You will grow to like each other.
This suggests that no matter how incompatible people are, they will grow fond of one another if enough time passes. Also it is likely a nod to the arranged marriages of old.

2. A girl being strong willed (see abusive) makes her cute.
Ironically enough also delivered to us by Genma, suggesting that it is okay for women to abuse men.

3. There is somebody out there for everyone no matter how much of a failure the girl is.
Rumiko never married so she might have just been inserting her own dreams into this. Akane was deliberately written to be the worst girl. (as seen from Japanese marriageable material) She was violent, had no breasts, was prone to misunderstandings, was bad at everything and anything considered feminine and wasn't even anything special as far as looks go. It was how she was written.

Originally that girl from Urusei yatsura was supposed to have a role very similar to her but because fans preferred the "other girl" Lum (meant just to be a foil similar to Shampoo) and because Rumiko wasn't big enough back then to go against her editor, she was forced to change the heroine. She never liked this and that is why we got Akane. Because this Rumiko hated Urusei yatsura, and she hated Ranma as well because fans seemed to be more interested in female Ranma and other characters. Her two best works were ones she disliked herself. So she kept on writing and pumped out stuff like Inuyasha and "Rin". These two had even more milksop female leads and were at the core very pale imitations of Ranma. Despite this she liked these better because the female leads were finally given more attention, in large due to the fact that the other characters had been watered down and made as boring as the female lead. But that is Rumiko for you.

So in the end, no Akane was never "hot". Ranma just liked her because Rumiko wanted to make a story about the most unlikeable plain girl being liked by the most prominent boy in the story.

Oh look Ilyia is yet another person who doesn't know what they're talking about when it comes to Ranma 1/2.

So you have never ever read Ranma 1/2 ever. Ranma is literally stunned by her beauty several times over the course of the series, starting off early with him being so stunned his reaction time vanishes and he gets hit in the face with a baseball.

Well it's a good thing Ranma and Akane are super compatible. Having similar interests, likes, dislikes, and clearly they enjoy spending time with each other considering they do it all the time without prompting and are utterly miserable whenever it looks like they might be seperated for any significant length of time.

More evidence that you haven't actually read the comic. There is no abuse in Ranma 1/2. It's slapstick comedy. Every single character gets violent when they get mad. That's part of the comedy of the series. Akane is not unique. Akane is, in fact, objectively the least violent female main character IN Ranma 1/2

Oh yeah, and you ALSO haven't read Urusei Yatsura, luckily I have and can tell you exactly how wrong you are.

You see, Ranma 1/2 is a romantic comedy, Urusei Yatsura was not conceived as one. It was conceived, and written for the first couple dozen chapters, as a simple episodic Looney Tunes esque comedy with no continuity or character growth. Shinobu was meant to be Ataru's girlfirend, with the joke being that she would DUMP him every chapter over whatever weird alien/ghost/monster girl Ataru's hitting on this chapter. She'd then be back with him the next because there was no continuity. Lum becoming a recurring character changed the formula, and Shinobu eventually broke up with Ataru for good. The story gained reccuring characters, they grew and changed, and the story gained a romantic element where there was none before.

And guess what, when comparing UY characters to Ranma characters, the girl most like Akane is... wait for it...LUM.

This is a joke right, Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha, and RIN-NE are all fairly different series.

Urusei Yatsura is a wacky episodic comedy that grows into a more character based comedy with a romantic touch. Ranma 1/2 is a romantic comedy with a additional action bent. Inuyasha is a serious action drama, and RIN-NE is a light hearted urban fantasy.

So how about you stop making up BS you know nothing about about stories you've never read.
