Oh look, someone is doing a reverse Interstella 5555.

Clarity edit: For those who don't know and won't look it up, Intersella 555 is a very strange animated film that was based around one of Daft Punk's albums. In fact, the movie has no dialogue and is played entirely to the album. It features a band of aliens, a literal band like instruments, that gets kidnapped and taken to Earth where they're recolored to look like humans and their memories are changed, much like in this image set, except from alien to human not human to alien. It's a pretty interesting experiment in animation and worth a watch if you like Daft Punk.

Is not a Interstella 555 clone. I'd say its a mix between Warlord of Mars, and Slavegirls of Gor, both of which are books. Books, you know? Those things with words in them that nerds like me read.

Warlord of Mars is a really old book, one of the first sci fi works you can find. On it, John Carter, a former soldier from the US Civil War walks into a strange cave in the wild west while fleeing from some hostile apaches. The cave is taboo for them for some reason, so they don't follow him in. In there, he finds humself posessed by a strange sleepiness, and wakes up in Mars, where due to the difference in gravity, he's able to show super human strenght when compared to the natives.

The Mars in that book is known as Barsoom, and its a dying world, barely kept alive thanks to an atmosphere-producing plant which was built dozen of thousands of years ago by a forgotten people, and barely maintained nowadays. Since the atmosphere is so poor, there's barely any life on Barsoom, to the point where there are no insects, and no weather, and since life is so harsh, and the world is so resource-scarce, people mostly walk around naked, but for jewelry and accessories. You can google "Dejah Thoris" to see pics of the heroine of the story, then you will instantly realize that's whom this artist is basing his works on.

It's a shame really, because he's going by comics and movies, which give Dejah that tiny gold bikini due to censorship, while in the book it is clearly explained that "she's nude but for her jewelry" and that "the effect it's gorgeous, and it struck Jhon that it was a perfectly acceptable way for a beauty to be dressed as". Men are likewise nude, except for a few straps of leather around their chest to hang their tools and weapons from, and they ALWAYS carry weapons, because life on Barsoom is cheap and violent. They do wear loincloths and such, because if you are going to be fighting for your life 24/7, you probably want SOME protection in that area, you know?

Anyway, comics and movies always depict females in Barsoom as wearing that gold bikini because they are comics and movies. Meaning, censorship is needed. This is a nicely drawn comic, but it feels like a HUGELY wasted opportunity, since, if there ever was any hope to see a proper representation of female fashion in Barsoom, it certainly is in comics for adults, yet here too, it is wasted.

Slaves would wear colored leather bands decorated with a few tiny feathers hanging from them, if anything. The reason Dejah has so much jewelry is because she's a princess of the greatest city in the planet, and a war leader/hero, and very afluent.

Such a wasted opportunity.

As for Slavegirls of Gor. Its a poorly writen sci fi book where there's a 10th planet that is perfectly opposite earth in its orbit around the sun so we have never spotted it, and natives from Gor sometimes kidnap women from Earth to keep their genetic pool fresh. That's it in a nutshell. It's not a book I'd recommend as the author is very repetitive and either forgets he already explained/described something or keeps doing so in order to make the book feel thicker. One can only read so many times about the shape of a sword or a knot or a chess game before it becomes boring as fuck.

I'd really like to talk with whoever is drawing this, because he does better work than I ever could, but he's really wasting a great chance.

Really, it would be alright if Ranma was wearing the gold bikini because they mugged three regular people. Its fine to assume one of them was a wealthy female, but the others... do you really think that a slave would wear that much gold? Why would you decorate her that much if you are a slave trader? I guess for the bling and bragging rights?

For those too lazy to look it up, here's Dejah Thoris pics, so you can see what popular comics make her look like

Maglad- Since it's a Ranma comic first, the main idea is "Ranma and/or crew show up and everything goes crazy." I've read Burrough's John Carter, much of Ranma, and only enough of Gor to not read more of Gor. You do raise some very good points, and some proper traditionalist points, but I for one do not think that any of it is a wasted opportunity. So far, it's well-crafted, on-model, and humorous.

Cute riff on Edgar Rice Burroughs' _A Princess of Mars_ that appears to be loosing its focus.

To be fair to the writer there are times in the manga where things are not consistent; like Sham Pu not even considering why the Guide would be there with two strangers. Heck, one of the reasons the anime is so different is Sham Pu was popular so she showed up way earlier then in the manga.

As for "Ranko" wearing gold, a common trope in sci-fi is what we consider valuable may be viewed as worthless in another culture. In the "Treasure of the Lost Planet" episode of _Lost in Space_, the treasure of a pirate who was from a planet filled with silver, gold, and gemstone turns out to be simple pig iron. In Catspaw (Star Trek) gemstones like rubies, sapphires, and diamonds can be manufactured and so are worthless. The female Draenei PC in WoW can comment "This planet has a tremendous supply of sandstone. The inhabitants must be wealthy beyond their dreams."

In fact, in the novel Utopia silver and gold are used for chamber-pots and close-stools (portable toilets) and anything else that gives the metals low esteem...which is why slaves in Utopia are the only people who wear the metals.

Per the artist's comments on his DA: Going from "they dyed my skin" to "it's always been green" was a continuity error and a mistake and he owns that, didn't catch it until someone pointed it out. Far as having male and female Ranma out at the same time, an explanation will be provided and he concedes that the story is departing from standard Ranma 1/2 stuff (I have no comment on this, never watched/read it).

Also, to Maglad and anyone else commenting on the costumes, apparently the author is contemplating a Patreon account, and one of the perks will be a pastie-free version of this comic.

Actually having male and female Ranma out at the same time is NOT departure from the "standard" Ranma 1/2 stuff as it was in the manga as part of the Mirror Mansion saga.

In the anime Copycat Ken allowed female Ranma to fight male Ranma (Ken in disguise).

So people complaining about there being two Ranma don't know Ranma 1/2 as well as they think they do.

I don't know if it is so much a fetish of green chicks and mind control but of non standard colored chicks and mind control. Heck, the Death game series degenerated into how many known characters can the Wile E Coyote knock off strangle while raping them before they suffocate. The continuity in that was a mess as a girl who should have been dead come back to life and kills her attacker and it is never explained how.

Jazzy81, I assume nipple clamps/rings keep it in place.

Honestly I think it liiked great when she had pale skin, but am I the only one that thinks it looks weird with the green skin background now? ;aybe another color would be good, like switching from gold to light purple, light blue, or white silk straps. Can still have gold accesdsories but.. well, gold on green just looks weird.

But my real question though, is, why does male Ranma appear with clothes on? It wouldnt have been that hard to make him appear named and then add a text bubble stating "then I took the clothes of one of the guards".

Anyway, since we have male ranma around, I guess most of the girls can go into his harem now?

By the way I think I haven't mentioned before: I really like the color shading and light on the art

Ranma splitting in two is one thing, but when one of those Ranma have their personality changed and doesn't even remember who they are... this ruins the whole concept of Ranma. Granted if say the female Ranma ONLY started hitting on her male self it could create some somewhat interesting scenes... but then you remember mirror clone story and realize that it wouldn't work. Ranma would not really care and wouldn't accept the female self at all. So the story can't really go any good place from there.

Having a female Ranma that isn't "Ranma" in her mind go after other males would just be boring and painfully ooc. It would be pretty disgusting.

@arcesp
It is a commission so the artist is bound by the restrictions of the one that is doing the commission. Anyone can make a new commission, but ironically enough people that make these kind of bad commissions often have money that they pour into it... I mean how much do you think a project like this would cost the person making the commission? At the very least 500usd... why would an artist turn down such an offer even if they found the story to be poorly written?

But here is an idea. Get in contact with the artist and make your own commission. Have him make a retake that starts from the point you suggested and ignores that other stuff. Think of it as two branching stories that started from the same point.
