Walt Disney got the idea for fairy tales from an adaptation of Snow White, that he happened to chance upon. Over the years, a lot of the stories had naturally become less dark. A lot of the work had essentially already been done for Walter. Thanks to WW1, the depression and WW2 grim dark was on it's way out.
