The ending is bitter sweet but not really sad in my opinion. She lost her sight but she doesn't lose him and she got to graduate at last. He found real love, not just great sex. They can still have a happy future together, it just won't be exactly the best future possible. For two seemingly star-crossed lovers types, that's better than par for the course.

while the ending isn't perfectly happy, the underlying tone is that they will ultimately be together happily. I read this work a long time ago and felt the feels as you did bros. But, now that I've reread it when I'm older I can't help get the feeling that she's using him... Now hear me out. The girl knows she's diagnosed with that disease and so knowing that she won't be attractive any more when she's blind, she grabs the easiest (in all sense of the word) guy she can find. That's where the protagonist comes in. He's a hopeless guy where no girl will ever approach him naturally. She uses his naivety against him and set up a scenario for him to fall in love with her (the study). At the end when he is crying beside her she also cries, but not the tears of joy and sorrow like the protag, but tears of maybe regret and self-loathing for manipulating an honest and pure-hearted man.
