Red's rant: Macross Delta didn't prove as popular as previous entries in the series. My theory: Freya was the least interesting female lead. The show would be so much better with more Mirage, less Freya :P

That's just the tip of the iceburg; teased about a triangle but didn't make one, various threads none of which were well developed, etc. Worryingly it came off as more an vehicle for the RL Walkure's music than anything.

Definitely not as popular for older fans I would say. It did give a nod to SDF in episodes 18 & 19 and tied up the franchise, so that's something.
Less Freyja wouldn't really help imho; one of the best scenes in the show involved her — the end scene in episode 16 — it captured the emotions and feelings of the characters, and to top it of the scene was overdosed in vanilla. Ironically, she's also canon waifu.

Too bad everything went into a downward spiral after a few episodes; it was evident (to me) by episode 20 the show had no way of wrapping everything neatly.
Instead of cutting the screen time of the main heroine, there are some other changes that could potentially make the show better:
・Changing Messer's character story or executing it better would help, since all they with him was try to gain sympathy points (while simultaneously wasting about 6 episodes worth of time).
・Cut the whole drama between Freyja and Hayate because it's honestly a plot contrivance you would see in romantic dramas.
・Tone it down on some screen time on about Windmere, Heinrich, and Roid.
・Additionally removing some screen time of Mikumo being in a existential crisis helps.
・(Here's one for you Red.) And finally... Make Mirage an actual heroine instead of being a third wheel.
