Ignoring that she is a magic fish, some atlantic salmon do survive spawning. If that is even what she is supposed to be, since it seems like she was just thrown into the ocean didn't go up river like salmon typically do. I am pretty sure the intention of the author isn't supposed to be that she dies.

All you idiots didn't check the source. The author tagged rainbow trout. An image search will help spot the differences between trout and salmon.

No, the artist is obsessed with furry/zoo TF. The story came from a commissioner, and both are probably unaware that this species might die after spawning.
