These files are RGB color + transparency, but only use 256 colors. Converting them to grayscale and removing the transparency layer will cut the filesize by more than half.

Looking at the color usage I'm betting the raws were indexed color with a limited palette (I can't be bothered to explicitly check). Keeping the same palette would reduce the filesize a bit more. But that might make the new text look weird.
