I imagine the prophecy is saying something about how their union will bring prosperity, water or whatever back to the oasis, and the priests just took that to mean a purely sexual act, and trained her exclusively for that. Turns out they were wrong, but the prophecy made contingencies for that.
Prophecies being ambiguously worded at best is pretty common after all.

She's not really all that dense, she's just coming from a position of having absolutely no clue how a real relationship works(those books probably didn't help). She's picking up on things pretty quickly once somebody actually gives her a hint in the right direction.

Poor old lemur dude, spent his whole life reading prophecy’s and ancient texts for the kingdom probably ordered by Zaph’s parents or even grandparents. Gets all excited that one prophecy he found not only got set up but also fulfilled. He was probably so ecstatic yet exhausted when he found the next prophecy, to bring even more happiness and self confidence in his work. However, that ending just crushed his enthusiasm and you can see the waste of happiness just drain from him. So sad
