Ohhh, I like that William and the Master both adopted forms that someone like Annie could accept more easily, but then had them gradually melt away so she could understand exactly what was going on.

(I also like that the Master allowed Annie to come to Her realm in the first place, which means William wanted to settle things with her and She cared enough to let him do that.)

Near as I can tell, the red appearing on the Master's body is just a display of Her transformation progress on Annie.
It started on p.15 (on Her lower lip) with giving William's dick to Annie, and then went down Her neck on p.17 and then spread out on p.21 and continues to spread on the following pages.
Each time it's shown to spread, Annie's transformation goes to the next level. The more the red grows, the more Annie transforms.

(And if the first chapter was any indication, the Master's "original" form is also 90% red, and She wasn't malevolent then--in fact, the last page ended in a giant snuggle pile. She might just be reverting back to a more true form of Herself now that She's won Annie over to Her side.)

I personally couldn't fap to it from the start because the story was so gripping that I wanted to know what came next. It's not that it fails in being porn but that it excels at being an amazing story. This is EXTREMLY rare in Comic/Doujin where the story hooks you more than the sex.

I don't think that's Entirely accurate. What we're seeing in the last couple pages (27-28) isn't actually Will, that's just the Master using his image and voice to manipulate Annie. She did this in the scene on page 11 as well.

The Master is using familiarity to get to her, rather than totally enslave her mind like she did to Will, probably because she specifically needs Annie's mind intact to get what she wants from her. That, or Annie is simply that much stronger than Will was, when he got caught up in the original ritual.

It's certainly up to interpretation at least until InCase gets a little more elaborative.

You read page 11 as the Master just disguising itself as William, who still exists as a separate entity. Whereas when combined with Annie's narration on page 13 ("William is the voice of the Master now."), I read it as the Master communicating with Annie through the form and identity of William. And my opinion was only strengthened when the William-thing extends itself out of the Master's body and speaks in red speech balloons in the newest pages. But that can also be understood as the Master's disguise slipping.

I think both are still completely valid reads of what the story's telling us at this point, and it's probably attitude and personality that color them.

Guys do take note that William spent WEEKS, if not, MONTHS researching and experimenting with the idol that was connected to The Master. This made him far more susceptible to The Master's manipulation. We can assume that Annie has been in The Master's world for a couple of hours, if not, a day at most so her will is mostly intact hence the illusions can't fully affect Annie as it did with William.

@God Revan actually, the timeline for William is laid out pretty explicitly. He was obsessed with serving the master within a week, before he'd even met her. By the time she appeared, he had no resistance whatsoever left. He never did, really. He pretty much dove into the idea of her as soon as he was aware of her.

Couple of thoughts:

* Master's "Mine" when She reveals her eldritch true self corresponds with similar moment in first part; William's reaction to that revelation was "she is more beautiful than I could imagine" - which points to him being too far on the Other Side already - while for his fiance similar revelation was horrifying: she still is far too human mentally, despite obvious changes of the body; her untimely exposure may be connected to stated inability of the Other Side inhabitants to comprehend science - William has already changed enough to be of no use in this question, and The Master needs someone scientifically literate to set the match to the prison.

* Master's monstrous form and predatory attitude does not preclude the option of Her being benevolent - after she transforms you into more suitable form, you would be able to finally recognize it - but no sooner: for one too attached to their old form and well set in their puritanical attitude such way to salvation would be not a miraculous act to graciously accept in awe, but a vile curse to be rejected with all one's strength.

I feel like the Master's "MINE" in this chapter is not necessarily directed at Annie herself. Notice that on page 25, the Master's hand first appears on the shoulder of the arm holding the vial, then in the very next shot both hands are converging on it. And in the page following, the Master has very intentionally taken the vial BEFORE attempting to claim Annie. It's pretty apparent that the Master values what Annie's knowledge can offer more than Annie herself.

That, however, only proves my point about the levels of corruption - Annie is not quite valuable by herself in either scenarios: if the Master is benevolent then Annie would be saved eventually along with all others; if the Master is malevolent, well, there are plenty meatpuppets beyond the gate - one more, one less - what's the difference, really?

Annie's knowledge and abilities, however - or, rather, the result of their implementation - is another matter entirely. Quite clearly, successful outcome of her endeavor in breaking the Prison is paramount. To prevent those abilities from degrading, her levels of corruption must be kept low - therefore the "Mine!" moment went drastically different for compleately inhuman at the moment William, and still mostly human (at least on mental level) Annie.

Her going back was, I'd say, the expected outcome. What're her other options? Go back to her ordinary life and try and suppress the memories of what happened? Commit suicide out of being unable to deal with what happened? Neither of those involves more porn, so they're pretty unlikely. Devote her life to revenge and/or taking William from the Master to be her own pet, which would probably involve a lot of study and the abandonment of her human form? Though I think that'd be pretty rad, I don't think it'd really fit the tone of the story.

In keeping with my more cynical take on the Master, I see the end result of this being that Annie's wish is granted, and her mind is taken away from her to ease her torment. Both chapters have been explicit about how from the Master's perspective, its trying to ease suffering and bring happiness. It would only be appropriate. As much as she values it, Annie's intellect only hurts her in the world she lives in, and the Master is so far removed from humanity as to not care about the nuances of the situation.

I mostly meant the way that she did it was the same as William, with the batshit crazy red paint everywhere. It's a fun throwback, especially since she didn't have an Artefact or instructions--she just KNEW how to prepare the altar.

Annie MAY end up losing her higher brain functions in the end, but I'm not sure it would happen just yet--remember, the Master needs Annie's mind mostly intact so she can continue to science up a way for Her to pierce the veil and cross over to the human world. After that's done, who knows what the plans for her might be.

Though in the sketches in other galleries, I see some nun characters who have yet to appear--they may be the protagonist of the next chapter, trying to keep the sexy abominations at bay?

The reason I think it's going to happen so soon is because the Master already attempted to fully take Annie immediately after claiming the vial. It implied to me that the "first step" Annie made was all the Master really needed in order to continue the process itself. Like needing a specialized tool to open an electronic device, and then everything inside is just normal screws.

Someone's been watching The End of Evangelion, I see.

Nice touch with the Master's eye literally being the horizon. It drives home that all we've seen so far are pieces of it. The real truth of the Master is beyond pitiful things like William and Annie. And the bit about "the desperate" is still phrased in such a way that benevolence or predation remain both valid. This really is so well done.

She's evil because she removes people's will, and she's evil because she offers a hobson's choice...or, at least, she's antagonistic. For the master to be freed...would mean the end of civilization as we know it...or, for that matter, anything resembling civilization. It's just...people wouldn't care anymore. Or even be 'people' anymore.

Antagonist - yes, and evil too - from Humanity's point of view, of course. Humans are not omniscient, nor even knowledgeable of things which lies beyond; and most definitely not moral paragons of absolute Good with a capital 'G'. Either there is no moral absolute, or Humanity is incompatible with it - and partial compatibility is incompatibility if we are talking about the moral absolute.
In the greater scheme of things The Master may as well be Good, and humans - evil.

Freedom of choice... well, if one would be given a choice between, say, raping an infant and using its severed head as a football versus joining a harmonious group of people living in peace and equal under the law of the land - that's hardly a Hobson's deal, is it? How many people would willingly chose first option versus second? And here The Master offers not even this - 'come in and be saved, or leave to find your own way' is decidedly not 'take it or leave it' dilemma of Hobsonian aspect, mind you, no matter how similar they may look. If someone offers you a free cup of clean water with no strings attached while you are dying from thirst in the desert - you have a binary choice now: to drink and be saved, or to refuse and die. So, yes, by that metric it would be an illusion of choice, which makes my protestation meaningless, I guess...
People who first followed Christ's teachings decided to renounce their former lives not out of compulsion, or fear. They weren't issued an ultimatum - they left their former selves and were reborn in Christ by their own will. Yes, later it had become more and more shady shady deal - but that rot was propagating in the absence of Christ himself, with interpreters and entrepreneurs twisting the Word to suit their own selfish needs. Mind you, the principle of things has nothing to do with historicity of Messiah himself, or fact of his existence or non-existence: people followed the Idea, they walked the way of Enlightenment in hope to reach the Kingdom of Heaven, the second Eden, in comparison with which their concurrent world was a place where Evil reigns. People who follow The Master willingly, do so willingly. And one can not take what is freely given.

The end of civilization - yes, with a caveat of 'as we understand it'. From Cro-Magnons' point of view concurrent Humanity hardly would be seen as 'people'. From concurrent Humanity's point of view neither beavers nor termites with their marvels of engineering, nor crows and octopuses with their aptitude for creating instruments and ability to operate human machinery - however simple, nor whales and dolphins with their oral traditions and myriad of distinct dialects that can be learned by newcomers who then proceed to teach their offspring... None of them are considered even sapient, much less having a civilization. What makes you think Humans have a civilization, then? A definition from Human textbook?
Oh well, a death of a caterpillar is still a death, after all - regardless of what butterfly emerging from cocoon may think.

As for not caring - concurrent Humanity hardly cares for a skill of making stone arrowheads, or maintain an open fire in a cave - a crucial civilization aspects among Humanity's ancestors. Fencing, horsemanship - a token aspects, hobbies instead of mainstay now. Generations to come would scarcely care for an ability to use pen and paper. Or skill of making windows from sheep's bladder, for the matter.
With shift in cultural paradigms human nature would lead them to caring about new things, while caring less - or no more - for others. It's inevitable. This is the essence of living, evolving culture.

Said all that, now - yes, Master's jailbreak would lead to elimination of everything concurrent Humanity holds in high esteem.

Your logic about what constitutes a Hobson's choice fallaciously presupposes that there can be no valid reason to dislike the second option. An extremely generalized hypothetical like that doesn't provide enough information to make any sort of judgment on why or why not someone might pick the first option instead.

For example, let's take the Master's offer as we can interpret it so far - peace and happiness forevermore, but your body and mind are transformed to its satisfaction, you will worship it to the point of what we would call obsession, sexuality is singularly important above all else...

I can see plenty of reasons people might hate that option.

There's also something to be said about backhanded coerciveness, and the ethics of offering someone something they want, but demanding they change themselves in order for you to provide it.

It ties in with the thoughts about religion and is illustrated by Annie's desire to be seen for her intellect in a time period not friendly to educated women. But that's going so deep into the building blocks of social interaction that discussing it is near-pointless in this context.

@Pseudo-Nim The problem with what you're saying is that the Master doesn't allow for free choice. Her mere presence saps a person's will to do anything else but please her. As we have seen, even mere contact can do the same, even after leaving her presence. She erodes away at sexual inhibitions, and sexual hedonism becomes the only thing driving the affected person's decision-making processes. We haven't even seen any food in her realm. Just a writhing orgy.

@FarkyMac I'm not entirely sure it's accurate to say that the Master saps a person's will even after leaving her presence. There's certantly some "Withdrawal" symptoms after leaving, but sounds like it's more like you have to get used to the way things were before you came into the Master's presence again, rather the symptoms someone goes through when trying to kick a drug addiction. Anne flat out says in page 31 that she would be perfectly able to resist the temptation to go back if she wanted to. The problem is, as she points out in the other pages, her world has given her such a raw deal that she had no desire to stay in it any more, sentiments that she almost certantly had before she and William discovered the Master.

The real thing that we'd need to see to really tell one way or the other, is if a "Normal" person who happens to be overall pretty content with their life and family, would, if put in Anne's position, still give into the temptation to go back as well, and that's not really a guaranteed thing.

@Psychotic Pastry There is also the possibility that, while anyone else would ultimately abhor this, it might be that the Master only contacts those who cannot obtain self-actualization on their own due to quirks that rub against the grains of society.

It could be very well that it only looks forced because we see the two protagonists as able to cope with the world. They had found each other, true, but that may only be a bit of misery loving company. The Master would perceive them as unhappy with their state of inner-emptiness, and would gladly welcome the alterations. The Master offers what they want, yes, but not at the COST of change, but with the ADDED DESIRE of change, a pleasant bonus if you will.

That's already been contradicted by the work, unfortunately. Page 15 has Annie noting that the Master will never stop and isn't capable of stopping, and page 22 has under-the-Master's-sway Annie declaring that the Master will "remake the whole world".

I think Annie's claims that she could quit any time she wants to should be viewed in the kind of light a statement like that deserves, considering she's spilling ink all over her hands, scribbling her words onto the page, and losing control of herself to rant about the Master's greatness. It may not be exactly synonymous with drug addiction, but the parallels are definitely there and it's more similar than it is not.

I disagree with calling it a parody of the Cthulu mythos. Sure, it's influenced or inspired by Lovecraft, very much so, but that just means it's the same genre. It's kind of like saying that Star Wars is a parody of Star Trek.

I'm gonna have to accept page 39 as a confirmation of my interpretation that the Master's servants are warped into being pieces of it. You don't get much more overt than this imagery without directly saying it.

I do feel for the people who wanted the Master to be more ambiguous. This is still downright amazing, but "the all-consuming, assimilating eldritch monstrosity" is not in itself a unique or interesting idea by comparison.
