I don't get it. After a quick check, how is it possible the non-digital scans are better than digital? I thought digital was pretty much the files straight from the artist's own pc.

Depends on the resolution they are published at I suppose.The print ones may not be lower than the digital ones.

Not at all. For serialized manga it means stuff ripped from official "streaming" sites like Crunchyroll. For doujins I could think of DMM. In any case the quality varies a lot but it is usual for them to be low resolution and/or heavily compressed, since for massive distribution the target are low delivery costs and then there are also concerns about unathorized reproduction and redistribution, so they are mastered pretty much in "sample quality".
In any case they are never "straight from the artist's own PC", since those would be huge PSD files or the like. The closest we have to "source" quality ironically are stuff like Fakku's releases since they work from the source files and master at relatively high resolution and at either low compression or lossless.
On the other hand scans also vary a lot but high quality ones are often much superior to the average digital version available to the public.

Oh, so it all depends on the publisher in the end. Thanks! Though I still don't understand the reasoning behind a lower res on digital. If it's delivery costs, you'd think physical print would cost more. And for unauthorized reproduction and redistribution, is that because pirates can't have the best quality but still good enough for customers?

If anyone scans or can get ahold of a scanner to do this for them, its always best to do the absolute highest dpi possible, edit out the papers texture, and crank the black and whites to be binary
Doing this, im able to pull off scans in the 10000x20000 range that come out smaller file sizes yet higher quality then people who don't do this. its also future proof to some extent because if it's sharp and a good scan, it will scale down to your monitors size, and as the resolution increases so does the scan. I have a few older jpeg comics that were small as hell that I found largest files of and this this to them, they all turn out smaller than jpeg even though they are png.

If anyone does this to a already scanned manga that has large files, and you just don't want to do the editing to remove all color correctly, 5-16 colors is all you need for even jpeg conversion and it usually will end up smaller then the jpeg files.
