Regarding the suspension of disbelief: my headcanon is that Minami is playing the role of scapegoat in her class. Basically everyone latched onto her eyes as an easy target, and she got stuck with all the bullying so that the rest of her classmates can live in peace. Best way to improve group cohesion is to find a common enemy, after all.
