At no point did I think the nurse was cheating. I think her intuition told her that she needed to compete with the lady next door and she didn't want to lose. That's also what was happening on p194.

Honestly, I'm glad this story ended with the man staying with his wife. She was the better woman anyway, but I also feel like the whole point of marriage is to create a stable environment to raise a family. If there are no kids involved, married or just in a long term committed relationship, it makes little difference.

As for "what this story is trying to say" I think it's not trying to justify adultery but just to say that no one is perfect and you shouldn't be so quick to judge.
