To add to what DarkCocoon said, in the prequel it indicates that his wife was indeed revived via necromancy and she was pretty confused herself before being picked up by some rapists in a van, that's where it went downhill as her succubus mode awakens.

So yeah, there was no possession, it really was indeed her.
