Ah yes. The Magical Girl(TM) setup.
Knew this was gonna be dark from the cover, but damn.

(Also, did the KC franchise design the abyssals to be ship girls from the start? Or did they only start adopting this setting as canon after a bunch of fan interpretation...?)

... they gazed too much into the abyss, now the abyss not just gazes in them, it haunts them.

This has to be one of the darkest KanColle doujins I've read, ever.

It plays like a horror story from start to finish and is darn effective in being unsettling and eerie.

Did Bacius just got sobered from his LSD induced drugs or something?
Knowing his usual trippy comedy this feels really different.

A lot of artists move genres, quite a few of them do all genres, some even shifted to opposite genres. It's nothing new. I know of a few very imaginative artists that can write creative vanilla scenarios, who then went on to draw the most unimaginative unrealistic rape/instant mind control/whatever snoozefest writing. Maybe they are tired? In any case, they are free to do whatever they want.

And not to mention those artists that always jump to whatever is sitting at #1 in comiket since the 1980s, So far, that's 4 franchises,

Nothing new.

Bacius has also done hentai for wani under samerupa alias, but u really never hear about that much. It kind of sucks that's his default alias under e-hentai tagging, as his bacius alias is much more well known.

@john Abbany, it was an early fan theory, which then got made official. Kancolle is not known for stellar writing from the devs, see the anime basically just copying every fanon up to that point. The earliest intent was probably making the abyssals american, because of them using imperial calibers. But that quickly went out of the window around Iowa release or the anime movie's release. It is also important to remember it was never meant to get popular and was supposed to be a small game for bored navy otakus before it exploded on twitter. There wasn't a lot of thought/effort put into anything in the early days. Even in the later days, it is hit or miss.

On another note, I've seen the same old G R I M D A N K "but sheepgrills r abyssals" drama enough times that it has no effect on me.
But it is pretty well written for one of those.

This one feels a bit different from the other "sheepdogs arr abysmal" dramas. The others I've read have all been, "you sink, you become an abyssal." Even other Betemius works follow that logic. (Unless you're Naka, in which case being scrapped every single time makes you an abyssal.) This one is different in that even if you survive, it's only a matter of time before you become an abyssal. At least in my limited experience, I can't think of another artist who robs the characters of their agency like this.

There was never any intent to make abyssals American. All the way back in 2013 Tanaka had already stated that he wanted American ship girls in interviews.

Something feels weird in Yuudachi. There's no poi in this doujin.

The problem for kancolle, was not kancolle, was DMM, Tanaka... more or less 30%, those guys are from a very hard right wing, even if they don't say publicly, those guys are ultra nacionalist. Almost all the artists for kancolle are from that circle.

@ John Abbany

Adopted.

The abyssals were meant to be the Allied Navy initially. The game is really Japan-centric and what was a great selling point initially ended up stifling its growth so they changed the origin of the abyssals. The creator, Tanaka did not expect it to become so popular to being with. His original plan was to end the game after a while with a final battle where all the girls were sunk, a defeat basically. That idea confessed by him in an interview influenced a lot of doujin artists, Bacius included.

Going back to 2013-2014, some really early doujins experimented with the idea of abyssals as fallen shipgirls and the popularity of that idea grew over time. They've made it canon around the time of the 2016 events. Until then event bosses resembled US warships more or less, but afterwards the boss ships started looking more and more like twisted versions of the shipgirls. The first European event, where Ark Royal was the final boss and reward made it clear even for the most stubborn of Admirals. The movie then finally cemented that idea as the official canon.

If you enjoyed it, I have a few more recommendations

What does that, even if it were true, have to do with anything about this story? Japanese people, by far and large, and especially during the era that Kancolle is derived from, are culturally nationalistic. This is the main reason weaboos love them so much. Don't confuse cultural nationalism with the "problem" political nationalism.
