MedNed, I honestly cannot even begin to describe how wrong you are. About almost every single thing in your post.

Firstly, HIV is the virus, AIDs is the disease it causes (Sars-COV-2 is the virus, and Covid-19 is the condition). Secondly, HIV is not in the coronavirus family. It's a retrovirus, more specificially, a lentivirus which is characterized by how long they incubate in humans.

We are seeing successful coronavirus vaccines before our very eyes, right now. The issue is that immunity doesn't last long. If your goal was to say "there is no vaccine with an endpoint of complete disease elimination through the hosts entire lifetime, such as for acquired immunity like chickenpox or vaccination such as measles", that's one thing. But now that there is a coronavirus that can infect humans of concern enough to put money into vaccines, there will be successful vaccines. Coronaviruses aren't are difficult virus to vaccinate for, it's just that the interest was never sustained enough and like influenza and other viruses, it would need to be updated every year or every other year. You don't spend millions or billions for a virus that went away as fast as SARS or doesn't infect enough people to profit like MERS. That's a more real reason for why we never had it. Blame Big Pharma and their greedy little cunts.

So I wouldn't exactly say that it is a notorious 'quirk' inherent to this virus family. MERS and SARS never grew to the pandemic level. Their research money, funding, and efforts got folded into other health initiatives. Now that Sars-Cov-2 is pandemic level, it is receiving the same amount of attention other viruses that infect similar numbers worldwide do, such as influenza viruses. And it's looking like, from the research we have now, immunity is the same for Flu vaccinations as it is for Coronavirus vaccinations. That is essentially a proven 'successful type of vaccine' as you put it.

Lastly, the reason you are so incredibly wrong about HIV compared to Coronaviruses is because of a real quirk of HIV, the long incubation period. It incubates in a single host, with multiple mutations that could happen in a single week. One person infected with HIV could have an enormous amount of mutations. This simply doesn't happen on the level with Sars-Cov-2, or coronaviruses in general. THAT is why there is no HIV vaccine. It's literally completely unrelated to anything you said. Even if you wanted to use one strain in one person to vaccinate them, HIV in their body could mutate to evade, or another mutated strain could become dominate, so you literally couldn't even vaccinate the single host, let alone anyone else. HIV evolves extremely rapidly, exhibiting the highest recorded biological mutation rate currently known to science.

For example, it was hypothesized Remdesivir would work because it inhibited RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, which most RNA viruses, including coronaviruses, use to replicate themselves. On the other hand, HIV uses an enzyme called reverse transcriptase. Any replication process can theoretically lead to errors. However, reverse transcriptase replication is one of the most error prone in viruses. Hence HIV's enormous proclivity towards mutation.
