If they want to upscale low resolution mangas they should at least use an ai upscaler like waifu2x. This looks absolutely awful. I think around 95% of doujins.com stuff is alright, but then occasionally there's shit like this and the overleveled doujin from yesterday, where it is clear they didn't give a shit about quality. This just baffles me. I can't imagine anyone looking at this and thinking this is an improvement.

I agree that most of their stuf is still okay, but the overall editing quality at doujins.com has decreased in the last year. And this terrible upscale is just the tip of the iceberg.
There were several occasions of overleved doujins. Just compare this example from an upload of today https://e-hentai.org/s/bc74418b6b/1873359-4 with the same page done by White Symphony https://e-hentai.org/s/a0cd389d9c/1869223-4 .
And it seems that some (or at least one?) of their editors even use e-hentai's downscaled 1280px images for editing instead of the full res versions like here https://e-hentai.org/g/1874029/5f1d7a23d0/
But what's upsetting me the most is the increased use of Manga Temple. This font is just ugly. Also the typesetting quality in general seems to have gone down in my eyes.

It's probably more that some editors don't know about Gamma, the slider between the ones for the black and white spot. I know from own experience that you come out okay in most cases when you use the same settings for all images.

I made an experiment with GIMP and this upscale was created by using the scaling menu in the imaqge editor used for editing with additional heightening of the black level.

I hate that overleveled look. It makes parts of the picture blend together when they shouldn't, and it obscures a lot of details. Though to be fair, in the Ranma doujin example the raw used was already too dark, and White Symphony used a different raw. But I get the point.
I guess some of this overleveling happens because some editors just use whatever settings look good on the first page they work on, before even checking how badly those settings ruin the other pages. Even worse, they may be using the same settings on different doujins. A lot of the overleveled doujins I've seen (from doujins.com and others) barely needed any leveling to begin with. If they were lazy, they could have just skipped leveling altogether and it would have looked better than what they came up with.

This doujin actually looks decent when upscaled with waifu2x. Meaning the raw of course, since this translated version is permanently ruined. Waifu2x generally seems to handle upscaling digital versions better. Just need to make sure not to use the noise reduction on a high setting (unless absolutely needed) as that can sometimes ruin the image. Obviously the results still aren't as good as a high resolution scan would be, but when no such thing is available, using a waifu2x or something similar can sometimes be a valid alternative.

@chiagioi1234 pretty much my same thoughts, read through the whole thing and it didn't really seem like there was any mind control going on unless it has to do with sakuya....but she's pretty much a non factor so it wouldn't even be worth tagging. Still good nonetheless but a bit disappointed I didn't see mind control.
