Description:

Kaguya Nanbu from Super Robot Taisen OG Saga

The first of Volks’s Super Robot Wars figures, I decided to pick up Kaguya after I bought Aschen. I’m not familiar with Super Robot Wars in the least but the series does have some awesome character designs. Like Aschen, Kaguya is built in 1/7 scale and is sold by Volks.

I commissioned Shopping Mall Japan to buy her off of Yahoo Japan Auctions, as Volks’s figures are apparently only sold in Japan. It took a couple of days to get my account set up but their service was subsequently very easy to use and I didn’t have any problems.

Paint is generally good although not superlative. Her hair and skin tone are somewhat flat, but the paint on her clothing is solid. Actually, her outfit is superb in general. Her visible navel is very hot, and I particularly like how it and the creases of her costume emphasize how tightly her dress sheathes her body.

She wields a sword that is equal parts awesome and wildly impractical. It was snapped into two pieces at the handle when I opened the package; I’m not sure if that occurred before I got the box or if that is due to my own clumsiness. Regardless, superglue fixed the problem and no traces of damage remain, so I’m not inclined to care. Her hair may present a potential problem as it seems structurally weak; it moves rather freely when the figure is handled and jiggled, and I’m wondering if it will break off the back of her head someday.

I don’t like her base very much. Wedge-shaped and overly large, it’s meant to dock with the two other Super Robot Wars figures, but I think that’s silly. For one, I don’t intend to get the third figure, and for another, Aschen is turned away, the way the bases are designed. The extension coming off of it also occupies an inordinate amount of space and as display space is becoming increasingly harder for me to find, I would have preferred a more compact base.

With her short dress, thigh highs, ankle-length hair, and indisputably magnificent rack, Kaguya offers an ostensive resemblance to Rider. Her white color scheme and cheerful disposition conjures an image of an inverse variation of Fate/stay night’s sexy square-pupilled gorgon.

She comes with a detachable face which I didn’t bother with. Unlike Aschen, her alternate face doesn’t look all that distinctive from her default face; I think maybe the eyebrows are different, but that’s it.

The front of Kaguya’s dress can be removed but doing so is rather pointless, as her nipples aren’t all that detailed and it leaves a prominent hole in her sternum. Here is a picture of her exposed boobs to illustrate what I mean.

While the workmanship isn’t stellar, I think this is an awesome figure. This may be a case of me liking the character design more than the figure, but I’m comfortable with that; Kaguya looks great, and in the end, that’s what matters most to me.

Meronpan has a review and more pictures on his site (NSFW warning). I’m not sure who else has done a review of her.

Kaguya and Aschen with their bases unaligned.

Kaguya’s pose invokes reminders of Rosanna, although one can see that Rosanna is a bit more robustly built while Kaguya is, in keeping with anime tradition, very slender and sharply wasp-waisted.
