I find it curious how there still is a following for an old and quite obscure animovie, but not for a much more well-known story the flick was based on.

Figures...

Aarokira's is better.

@Pseudo-Nim
It's not really a surprise considering that it's a pretty old book (1880s) and Treasure Planet is the latest adaptation that actually came with a worldwide mainstream release that had any kind of prominence. Unless it's required reading for school, not a lot of kids have read the book by the time the movie came out.

Compare that with the much more recent "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (1950s) and how most people these days are more likely to know it more for either the cartoon, the live-action movie, or the pretty recent 3D animated movie depending on the age.

Disney marketing bucks trying (and failing) to make up for the cost of making the most expensive traditionally animated movie also definitely helped.

Obviously inspired by Aarokira's take on the characters. Not bad!

I think the Muppet Treasure Island is a far more famous adaptation of Treasure Island than Treasure Planet is, though I love both movies

Oh, I agree - but this just underlines my sentiment. Though @theCircle57 is most certainly on point in that account.
I tend to measure everyone by myself, you see, as it naturally goes - and I had read through every Jules Verne novel I could get my hands on by the tender age of 11, among quite an amount of other authors.
Cue endless amount of frustration towards anyone praising originality of, say, 'Expanse', or 'Mortal Engines'. 'Tiger, tiger!' and 'The Reefs of Space' (hi, WH40K) were already here way before protomolecule, and so was 'The Inverted World', for the matter.
But I digress.

Relative lack of r34 of Muppet version in comparison could be easely attributed to nature of the flick itself, I guess - 'Treasure Planet' is far more fertile in that department - and old doorstoppers migrated to the domain of pretentious hipsters quite a time ago. Rest is just a timeframe of shifting demand and supply moving around noospheric area where my osmosis nets dwell, making me notice ordinary by most other accounts flukes.
Eh.
