That's default 'sort by name' implementation used in many operating systems/file managers. It sorts on per character instance, first ordering filed by first character, then the second one to order subgroups, et cetera ad infinitum.

Problem arises with numbers. Under certain condition, system treats numbers as words, thus ordering all the numbers starting with digit '0' to be at the start of the list, with subsequent digits in ascending order used to populate the outcome. Then it uses the digit in the second place, and so on.

This leads to, say, files with names '1', '10', '100', and '1000', followed by '1001', '101', '11' being displayed in that particular order, for example.

A nuisance, really. That's where tradition to use file name like '0001' instead of just '1' comes from, by the by.

The "original file" is out of order
Just check the file name for each picture on this page
The first part goes straight in correct order
But what follows, indicated Hairy or Hairless version
And right after that is the REAL "original order"
You can see the first one is 01, the second is 010 and the third one is 0100
There are the 1st, the 10th and the 100th images in the set in correct order
As I type this comment, I see the order is correct, Hairy version starts at 247
