nope. not in a majority of states now. those states passed "right to work" laws which simultaneously made it harder for places to unionize but also changed laws so that all employment is "at will", meaning I can fire you for any reason, no reason, or for any reason that doesn't discriminate on race, religion, identity, or political reasons. so it is easily conceivable to get sick, go to the hospital, get fired, and have no recourse other than to try to find a decently paying job (which there aren't any if many).
