Whoever edited this overleveled the pages though. Compare the pages to the raw and you'll see the darker areas have expanded and eaten away some detail. When leveling it's better to adjust the values only up to the point before the areas that are meant to be pure black/white start growing and eating away the midtones and details. It helps to zoom in closer while leveling, so you'll see exactly when the small details start disappearing and when you should stop. From that point on, if you need the image to be darker/brighter, you can adjust the gamma input (middle). You may need to slightly re-adjust the other inputs after though.

While the overleveling in this is no where near doujins.com garbage tier, losing details is still bad. Any detail loss is always a sure sign that you're doing it wrong. There are some lazy people who use the same levels settings on everything, no matter how badly it shits up the images. I've even seen some people leveling digital versions, which is unnecessary near 99% of the time.
Leveling is not an obligation either. If leveling doesn't benefit the image, then it can be skipped entirely. Leveling should only be done to improve the image. This doujin would have looked much better with only a slight adjustment. And even with no leveling, it still would've looked better than it does now.
