I've read somewhere that in Japan if you're underage and running away from home due to abuse, the police can still return you to your home because you're still underage and thus have no your own "agency"; is that true?

pg.73: "chinese characters" not kanji?

there're anime with similar initial:

@cybeast93
it's kinda threw me off, like "is she not japanese"?
You could just explain in some blank spot or the line between that like "her character name mean happiness"

@nhoctu97
Yeah, that's what Kanji are essentially.
The original line is, "あんまり…名前好きじゃなかったんでひらがなで通してたんです".
I tweaked the line a little because I don't want to explain what Hiragana/Kanji is and why 幸 and ゆき are pronounced the same but written in a different way.

UPDATE: Added translation notes at the end, and fixed mistakes on pages 25, 70.
Thanks for bearing with me.

Bittersweet story, with a sweet ending. Where can I get started with a story like this that belongs to me?

@zufield heartboner maybe?

@christantoan yep, welcome to japanese child "safety" laws. Made even worse when said abusive parents withhold their child's ID which automatically makes the runaways a hostage of bureaucracy

Good work, I just have a problem with the translation of the title. "Runaway" would have been "iede". "Wakeari" means more like something that damages the market value of a product; when used with humans, it means something akin to "has a troubled past" or "has (emotional) baggage".

@sgc_geh, yeah I think "Living together with a girl with issues/defective girl/girl with a dark past" would be too wordy/not have the same impact.

It’s tough.

In this case, I don’t know how you can give an accurate and succinct translation without introducing new connotations. Something like “Living Together with a Broken Girl” is succinct, but it gives the wrong impression. She’s too resilient/functional for the word ‘broken.’ On the other hand, ‘troubled girl’ isn’t as severe, but unfortunately suggests delinquency. ‘Emotionally disturbed girl’? All of these introduce a new kind of inaccuracy that doesn’t match the story. It’s one of those cases where there’s not really a nice one-to-one translation. It leaves a bitter aftertaste,

So what do you do? If you pick a more accurate title translation (broken or troubled girl), people reading are confused about why she’s not broken or troubled enough. The translation’s inaccurate to the story. If you pick ‘runaway’, now it’s more (but not completely) accurate to the story, but less accurate to the original title. Which do you choose?

(Actually, after thinking it over, I really like the term ‘damaged girl’.)

A lovely story, but the ending bothers me. It just doesn't make much sense.

She's a middle-schooler left all by herself without family, as well as an abuse survivor. She's bound to get some kind of support or at least observation by child services. Yet no one seems to notice or care when she immediately moves in with a random guy she just met (as she says).

I know I'm supposed to feel happy for them and not think too much, but that's stretching it a bit too far. Unless I'm missing something?

@worldendDominator2 Her being a middle schooler was just his initial assumption from her size, she was heavily malnourished with stunted growth.
She's probably 15, several years passed to the epilogue where they can finally marry and you need to be 18 to marry without parental consent since I doubt her dad was gonna sign off at 16

I agree with you though, weird that the government just left her there all alone

Here's the thing though. Even with therapy, this girl is going to have serious mental trauma and issues. She will probably not be easy to live with over the years.
