you can get upset about english adopting foreign words but its always done it for as long as its existed. you can go this is this, and that is that, if you want. but simply taking a phrase and using it in english is something people have done for ages.

@weedlayer I think the reason for removal of honorifics being controversial is reasonable, even if they are typically unnecessary. They add context to character interactions and relations that aren’t present in languages lacking such things, like English. I have similar feelings about the use of Japanese pronouns — Use of Boku, Watashi, and Ore are typically all translated to I in western works despite implying differences about a character and the way they view or wish to present themselves. Typically not incredibly important to the story, but there is information to be gained there so I don’t see anything wrong with using it if the translator wishes.

The thing is, Japanese formality indicators are *all over* the language. You yourself mentioned pronouns, and there's also different conjugations (like the masu form). Are you supposed to translate sentences like:

"Please, help-masu watashi, Yuuki-sama!"

At that point, you're barely translating anymore. Context is ALWAYS going to be lost in translation, the "debate" over honorifics is just people overly privileging a single superficial aspect of the Japanese language they understand. The question you should be asking yourself while translating is "How would this person express this same thought if they spoke English as a first language". This doesn't always give the most literal translation, but it gives the most natural one, and should preserve author intent if you're doing it right.

That said, I've definitely been lazy and used honorifics before, particularly ones like "-sensei", which are hard to translate in a way that feels natural. I don't think you're a bad translator if you use them, I just think it's generally unnecessary.

Also, English does have honorifics, like "Mr." "Ms." "Dr.", "Lord" and "Sir". It's just they aren't used as extensively as in Japanese, and many are archaic.
