You should really level / process the scans if you're gonna translate it. Especially since it'll look much much better for the level of effort that it requires, even just basic adjustments would've helped tremendously.

But to answer your question, you want the brightest parts / white parts to be consistently pure white which is hexcode #ffffff. And you want the darkest parts / blacks to be pure black which is #000000. Those are your main goals while also trying to preserve as much details as possible.
You can see that it's no longer washed out and faded looking. It takes about 30 seconds to a minute to do that but contributes greatly to how it looks. Hope that answers your question.
