The worst part about the bridget retcon is how it literally completely destroys his entire character and promotes grooming.

He gets groomed from birth by his village into being a girl, and he spends his entire life fighting that grooming. And then the retcon happens and he's like "oh yeah they groomed me successfully I actually am a girl".

This is not a trans problem, it's a grooming and retcon problem. If Daisuke just created a completely new character and made it trans, nobody would give a shit. It's because he took an established character, destroyed his background, and promoted grooming, all to appeal to the left, who don't actually give a shit about the game. The left couldn't name 3 characters in Guilty Gear not named Bridget. They have no idea about Bridget's backstory nor do they care. All they care about is hitting check boxes and then moving on to the next thing to destroy.

The only good thing to come out of the destruction of bridget's character and promotion of grooming is that it made the left admit that they will defend and promote grooming and pedophilia as long as they can get their trans check boxes.

I feel like everyone is blowing this out of proportion on either side of the debate.

Consider an analgous story where someone is raised to be a human weapon from birth. Then they go out into the world and realize that the way they were raised was kinda fucked up. They ultimately decide they *are* going to continue to fight and/or kill, but for reasons they believe in rather than someone else's. I feel like a lot of GG fans would eat up a storyline like that, but replace violence with gender and now it's endorsing grooming?

I understand there's all the political/social background that you've cited that sort of colors the interpretation. And it doesn't help that a lot of the biggest proponents of trans-Bridget even before that was confirmed were making tons of absolutely dogshit arguments that did basically amount to all the stuff you're complaining about.

But in a vacuum I honestly have no problem with the trans-Bridget stuff. I can buy into the storyline that someone was raised as a girl, pushed back against that notion when they went out into the world, and then decided on their own later that they wanted to identify that way (but this time for their own reasons).

What WOULD be excusing grooming IMO is if Bridget then said "...and because I identify as a girl now that means it was okay that my village tried to force that on me in the past". I don't recall Bridget saying anything like that though.

Either way I maintain my position that this honestly doesn't fucking matter. And I say this as someone who follows and enjoys the lore.

Let me give you some missing context. Bridget was raised as a girl because his village had a superstition that same-sex twins would lead to disaster and his parents would have had to either abandon him in the wild or see him lynched if they didn't. The reason he left his village was to bring back a fortune and make the village admit that their superstition was wrong (by having a same-sex twin bring fortune rather than misfortune to the village).
It's important to mind that while he was outside, Bridget readily identified himself as male either when asked or unprompted (or prompted by Johnny hitting on him before things could get too awkward lmao).

During the events of XX, Bridget joined in on the hunt for Dizzy (lore aside: Dizzy is the daughter of Justice, the super big bad Gear from Guilty Gear 1 who was defeated by Sol, and there is a ridiculously huge bounty on her head because people are scared that she'll initiate another Crusade; Dizzy mostly just wants to live in peace away from everyone who could hurt her). He happened to be the second person to show up, after Ky, who had fallen in love with Dizzy and decided to steal her away; since Bridget was present and agreeable, Ky allowed him to claim that he defeated Dizzy - so Bridget claimed her bounty and went home with an absurdly huge amount of money, forcing his village to abandon their superstition and allowing him to live comfortably in his village as a guy.

This is why Bridget doesn't show up in Xrd's story: he's won at life, overturned his village's superstition so he can live freely as a man, and has a comically large amount of money. My guy doesn't need to show up for anything. (He's also not a stunningly strong fighter nor does he have a personal stake in anything going on, so you can understand a desire to keep his head down after a brush with people like Ky and Dizzy who are a devastatingly powerful holy knight and a friendly neighbourhood nuclear warhead respectively.)

Fast forward to Strive and suddenly "oh Bridget is a girl and has always actually identified as a girl". The problem is that this is not actually trans-inclusive, but *actively promotes harmful stereotypes* about trans people, like "if you crossdress you are automatically trans" or "crossdressing your child will make them become trans". My partner is actually trans and they were absolutely devastated that such a high-profile game was repeating stereotypes that have caused them serious pain in the past. (Of course, your average "trans is trendy" person on twitter doesn't give a shit about this, or even better, wants it to remain so that they can continue to infantilize and "protect" people who are actually trans.)

On top of this, it ruins a *perfectly good character* (and GG is in part famous *because* it has such rich characters and lore for a fighting game) simply for the sake of ticking some boxes. If they'd just made a new character (or settled for girl Testament, who as a Gear is capable of being hermaphroditic if they so desire) it really wouldn't have mattered, but doing such a huge retcon on a character who was genuinely interesting (remember that "trap but not by desire" was a very common archetype in early 2000s - we saw a bunch of JP comedic media about male characters who were forced to crossdress, and very well, for reasons outside their control), and while Bridget had comedy beats his story arc was mostly a serious examination of someone trying to overturn a harmful cultural belief - only for Strive to come along and casually repeat real life, very harmful cultural beliefs.

It's kind of a big deal.

Whatever the devs or people in the community say, it's up to you to view Bridget as whatever you want. Arguing with people just suggests that their opinions have some sort of power over you (in regards to this specific issue) when that simply isn't the case.
