I'll disagree and say that brown Velma was the one salvageable thing from the new show. It's the only thing that got me to pay attention in the first place. Velma in general is the only thing that gets me to pay attention to Scooby Doo. Of course, that makes it hurt all the more that the show that's all about Velma is a plane crash of a series, but that's okay, porn will come to the rescue of hot girls stuck in terrible shows just like it always does.

Edit: I want to clarify that the only thing I thought was attractive about nu-Velma was her design (and even then, her design in the show doesn't measure up to the promotional art). Don't take my comment to mean that I'm attracted to her terrible personality or that I'm excusing the show's quality because of a superficial aspect. I know Scooby fans are really tilted over how crappy the new show is, and rightfully so. I just wanted to look on the bright side, but apparently people really don't like that.

Dude, show's writer literally said that Velma is her self-insert. She never was interested in telling a story of Velma Dinkley, she only was ever interested in "telling" a "story" - note the quotation marks - of her herself interacting with the Mystery Machine Gang. Except not really, for she also had absolutely no interest in the MMG itself in general, nor in any one member of it in particular.
She simply wanted to tell her story exactly how she wanted to tell it, and used hollowed-out corpse of "Scooby-Doo" franchise as a putrid flesh-suit for it. disregarding all the rotten parts falling away as it moves.

Said that, similar such approach is not evil in itself, Lauren Faust standing in bright justification of the concept when it is done right.
But that was MLP - a franchise where there are no constant lore or characterization by the bloody definition. Hence - generations, of which the fourth one - 'Friendship is Magic' - was notoriously good simply because Faust disregarded every single thing created before her, and started with a clean slate.

HOWEVER.

1) MLP is a border case. One can not just drop that can of Eldritch Malarkey on any arbitrary franchise: as I mentioned, fractured and deliberately liminal nature of MLP in general made it possible;
2) One can not substitute socio-political treatise as a replacement of actual fucking story. "Starship Troopers" is, basically, "Triumph of the Will" retold for the deluded shipple - but it is also a bloody good book. "Valerian" sings praises and litanies to communism - but it is also one of the best things to ever come from the French comic school. Tell the good story, and all will be forgiven. Replace the story with #CurrentThing - and you will get "Velma";
and 3) One actually needs a talent for storytelling to tell the stories. I know, I know - shocking, innit? It seems that when one's talent is only manifests in nepotism and exploiting trust networking, one can not tell a good story for the sake of Saint Phuk, praise be upon His name. Which is pre-fucking-cisely the case here.

She should've gone with total crack-pot approach. Genetic experiments, psychedelic drugs and visages, fucking aliens. Shaggy being Scoob's bloody son due to all previously stated in high overdose, all while Daphne is, in actuality, Fred, who is a very talented drag-queen, and Fred is, naturally, Daphne after particularly successful hormone therapy. Velma herself is a completely delusional insane lunatic divorced from any semblance of objective reality - but simultaneously the only sane person in the Mystery Machine Crew. Here only flaw is that she keeps dragging The Crew in random aventures mistaking them for the criminal cases in dire need of detectives - but the Gang follows her because she is funny like that, and life is so, sooo boring without such escapades anyway...
Add a backdrop of global post-economical collapse where modern civilization is, basically, a decomposing pile of filth at the moment - and you'll get yourself a nice comfy crack-fiction show!
