i used to just cheat in art college by turning on a mode in illustrator that auto-aligns all my squares and other shapes to the proper plane, then of course making 3d objects with say a circle into a cylinder, then some image imported to fit the faces, needless to say i got caught and it was points off for not hand drawing it first.
