This reminds me of elementary school where I had to fight 16 kids for half an hour in a running battle all throughout the school before no one ever messed with me again...
The confrontation had been building for a long time with smaller fights from 3 to 12 kids at a time.
Until finally all the bully's in the school teamed up to try and "put me in my place".
Seems my place is top of the list of people you don't F with as most of the reasons I fought were to stop them from messing with other lone kids and after the big fight. [which ended up in the local newspaper] "Teachers at lunch during fight between over a dozen students" XD

I have an even worse childhood experience from when I lived in a low income apartment complex, where I had to run from 20 illegal Cubans when I got off the bus.
The leader was talking to his girl friend in the seat right in front of me talking about how he and his friends were going to beat me up.
She asked why and he said for fun.
Before the bus stopped I jumped off and ran while they were still getting off the bus.
I picked up a metal poll from the trash and fought them half the way home.
They did not stop chasing me until there were only 5 left standing and they realized I had already left 15 of their friends screaming in pain on the ground with broken ribs, jaws, noses, elbows and kneecaps.

I ran home and cried, not knowing at the time why people are so horrible.

Mob mentality is a very dangerous thing and should never be under estimated.

The lessons my great great grandfather, great grandfather grandpa and dad about fighting really saved my life.
You will never be able to stand and fight multiple attackers at once.
You have to use the terrain and anything at hand as a weapon to put the odds in your favor and gain any and every advantage in a fight.
I was fast, so I ran, until I could find a weapon and take out the fastest kids chasing me first.
Then the slightly less fast ones, then the average, then the slow.
Apparently I cackle maniacally when I'm fighting and it is unnerving to people who have fought against me so I don't know at what point exactly the kids chasing me decided it was a bad idea to keep chasing me.
After I dropped 15 of them while cackling like a mad man with a metal rod, now bent almost 75-80 degrees swinging it around at the end like a makeshift nunchaku like thing (not a very effective way to hit someone, but I figured at the time it was intimidating) after I had just bent the bar over the last kids face.

This reminds me of Elfen Lied, specifically Lucy's ordeal at the orphanage - you know the one, with the kids abusing her daily and beating her puppy to death (and the adults being completely useless as they too fear and revile Lucy). What seals that scene is one of the kids looking at Lucy with a sickened sneer and telling her they abuse her because she's "different", as if that is obvious and normal.

These may be parodies, but they're also cautionary tales. We are capable of this shit, look what happened in Europe before, during, and after World War 2.

I tend to think that "People" is not the persons involved, taken one out of a group, with their personal loves and hates, but the spirit of the group itself, essentialy led by cliché. People in that bus happened to think of themselves as a bunch of gangsters, as a sort of group mentally not clearly purposed and led by a mutual desire to be something greater, as in greater than something. They just had to make somebody, anybody, suffer, to do it with their own hands or just to see that with their own eyes, and then happen to be part of it while not being that person suffering, just in order to feel a bit relieved, as the gang does its self-attained job. In short, it's a hobby to them, a power thrill. That time it was you, an other day it would have been an other. Your biggest luck is that you managed to become a bully before becoming a victim, and take out a significant portion of them so the group cohesion stopped. The more violent people group, the more they want blood. The less violent people are left, the less they want to continue. I thought this was just a cute, relatable little comic about how awful people can be. Having experienced the worst of humanity, much like Fur, I genuinely thought (spoilers) Night was right in that even being nice is wrong since Fur needs to learn that the world is never going to accept her; she needs to harden, it's an unfortunate reality for us weirdos.

Instead I see this is just the boring meatspace reality but with magic and some arbitrary “I said it so that's what makes us friends or not” logic.

That's not what makes someone a friend. That's just words. Friends are the family you get to choose, they're the people you can count on to bail you out of jail, to give you a ride when your car gets stolen: friends merit trust.

Trust means giving someone the power to hurt you, to screw you over, and trusting them to do the right thing. There's no relationship without trust.

Fur is friendly, which inherently means trusting. We all want to see her be happy, but we're human and susceptible to the power of “cute” which is just another way of thinking about something being weak and pathetic. What if she weren't cute?

What if she were a scrawny, too poor to afford nice clothes or regular showers and deodorant/shampoo, greasy and ugly scaly? What if she had no outward or tangible skills or talents, or worse, what if they made her even more weird? I was that kid. I learned that my talents are what people hate about me and to just keep them to myself. I learned that appearances are the only things that matter, the only thing to work on. I learned that nobody in this world can be trusted, only yourself.

It's a bitter world, but Fur needs that lesson, because the world won't change. All she can do is adapt.
