@Tintern Groups have translated for years without using mtl at all, no idea where you pulled the idea that most groups secretly use it. And yes people would notice if you did. Some people do know the language and would be able to tell from raws if the translation is off. Or just from the grammar being off. Ive seen a few myself that at first souned okay but i couldn't get rid of the feeling it was off, sure enough when i looked further it turned out to be a mtl. So yes, people would notice. As for why the hate for mtl? It defeats the purpose of a translation. If we didn't care about accuracy we'd read the raws for stuff only. The whole point of a translation is to read and understand, and a mtl does not do that. Even the best ones miss shit, so there is no reasonable reason to trust any of them. Not to mention anyone can use a mtl so anyone without a care for quality would already do that. The rest, literally anyone looking to read online, want accuracy in a translation and not a mtl. Hence the giant wave of fuck off you had. A mtl is worse than a rewrite in my opinion since at least a rewrite requires some imagination. A mtl is just lazy and can be done by anyone.

You know a quick cursory search of the tag "rough translation" would immediately prove you wrong, right? It's so incredibly easy to tell if something's MTLd by non-JP speakers, even if nobody says so. I've spent years exposing this shit, and so have others. Here's the magic trick I use: I can read Japanese and compare to the original text! Ta-daaah!

@DJjames I would argue that doesn't matter to anyone. An MTL being used at all seems to trigger people, even if the intent is to get an idea of what the other language is trying to convey and then rewrite that into readable english. People would rather you speak Japanese and then provide a garbage translation into english than provide readable english that isn't a spot on translation of the Japanese. It's honestly a little baffling. I could understand if people were asking for money, but here we are...

I mean clearly it does matter, considering almost no one likes mtl's. That's why they 'trigger' people, because it's worthless and only serves to raise hope seeing it uploaded only to see it's a mtl instead. And yes, most do want an actual translation that reads bad instead of a good reading one that isn't spot on. Being spot on is kind of the point of a translation. Because the garbage but accurate one can be fixed with proofreading to clean it up. But the inaccurate will always still be inaccurate.

@DJjames To someone who doesn't speak Japanese, they can't tell the accuracy anyway. And if someone can speak it, but does nothing to offer a translation, how will anything ever get done? You say the inaccurate one will always be inaccurate. Except in the case of the person offering MTL translation you can see if they are editing that garbage into English and formatting correctly. If so, just correct their translation. Clearly that person is willing to do a translation but lacks a vital tool (the ability to read and understand the language) so if you correct them, they can fix the problem and there you go, a decently edited and accurate translation. There is a large amount of Doujins, and a finite number of people who can properly translate. Yes, MTL is still kinda garbage, but it will only get more accurate with time. I look forward to an age where you can feed a page into babelfish and have it auto translate for you. But for now, unless someone is willing to pay, many of those obscure titles will just never get translated. Maybe if some of the people bitching about MTL actually just offered corrections we could get more done.

@Samuelnos, I appreciate the support on this topic, however I noticed two things while perusing other MTL content on this site.

1. It's not that uncommon for uploaders to not be upfront about something being MTL
and 2. There's no tag for it so it's pretty much shoved down peoples throats without any way of hiding the content from search results.

Unless these problems are solved I don't think anyone would be willing to listen to any argument on why it should be allowed on this site.

I might consider uploading them here again if these problems are solved because I genuinely don't want my MTLs to be shoved down peoples throats when they have no interest in these types of translations,
even if it's been edited to be more understandable.

@Samuelnos and I'm well aware of that, there will always people to lazy to block contented but not lazy enough to bash on said content as well as those weirdos with an addiction of constantly being angry and searching for things they hate, it's unescapable.
all this will do will appease the more normal and sensible people

and in terms of the rewrite tag, I meant something more specific to just MTLs since setting it to rewrite will just have it shoved down the throats of people who just want to read content with rewritten plot.

I've read "rewritten" since 2010 and back then its a total sh1t especially when they changing name and simply just write the situation however the f.k they fancy to.
