The natives gave syphilis to the settlers so there was at least some back and forth. But yes, the natives may have been good warriors, there's plenty of native tribes we'll never know the names of because other tribes completely wiped them out. The main thing they wanted in trade from settlers was guns, why? To use on other tribes they had disputes with. They lost because warriors aren't soldiers. Tribes will lose to a nation.
