The doujins I like usually take forever to get translated, so I decided to do this one myself since I love this series. A lot of the main character's speech bubbles are very repetitive (often just 'ah' or 'ahh'), so I introduced a little variation in them.

This "etiquette" is mostly a way to loosely coordinate scanlation so that people aren't wasting manpower on the same things when there are a ton of untranslated works that could use the attention. It's also really frustrating when you're halfway through something and someone else releases their version of it and turns your hard work into a waste of time. You sort of get the same feeling for entire series you start working on too, since you get invested in seeing it through to the end. Some scanlators do abuse this to "claim" things they're not really working on at the expense of the readers, but in this case that's definitely not what was happening. It's understandable that you aren't aware of scanlation group activity status if you just picked something up for practice, and I think you've done a pretty good job (the typesetting is very basic compared to the other parts, but still at an acceptable level), so you don't need to worry about breaking some horrible scanlation taboo. It's just an unfortunate coincidence that you stepped on a dramamine here. Checking the raw gallery comments and some of the author's recent translated works will probably be enough to let you know if anyone has it in their queue.

Thanks for saying so. By raw gallery comments, do you literally mean comments on this site under the galleries?

The thing that prompted me to translate this was a post on the raw gallery that said this was most likely going to be MT-ed, and I thought, hey, i could do one better than that. I'm no pro, but I translate these things for myself every once in a while to practice.

I think I've learned my lesson on this one though, and I'll just stick to neglected works that haven't been translated in a few years, or have been horribly translated thus far lol

If there is somewhere I can find ongoing scanlation group statuses, I'd love to see it, because there are a couple of others on my queue, but I'm reconsidering uploading.

Yeah, I know translators will put comments in the JP galleries here saying they plan to work on things sometimes, especially when new magazine raws drop and different people go for different authors so we can get a bunch of them in short order. I don't work on H stuff much, though, so I might be overestimating how reliable that is. There are too many small groups and solo translators out there to effectively keep track of all of them. You never know when some random person who assumed he was the only one interested and thus never mentioned it anywhere has been letting a nearly-finished version sit in QC for months.

If you've already finished, or mostly finished, something and it's not MTL-tier garbage, you're not doing any harm by uploading it. Duplication is just a thing that happens sometimes, even between established groups when they're both rushing something new (and occasionally even with old stuff), and it usually ends up with both versions existing side-by-side and no hard feelings. Fighting against the MTLs flooding this place is also a common reason for there being duplicate galleries, one cutegyaru uses quite a bit, so nobody's going to fault you for that. This is ultimately a hobby, though, so you're free to work on whatever you enjoy working on and want more people to be able to read.
