Alright, I've seen the Archie series like... twice. Wasn't Knuckles supposed to be like... a lone guardian of the emerald? Why are there so many echidnas?

There are 2 ways to answer that question. I'm trying for the shorter answer.
Archie Sonic comics was/is somewhat simple and confusing piece of lore. Basically, Knuckles was a test tube/test egg baby. (Don't Ask, blame his dad Locke for that.) Anyway, Knuckles wasn't the only Echinda, just one that was dumb powerful. Pun partially intended. He was a guardian of the Master Emerald, since in Archie's lore. The Echindas were the most advanced species on Mobius, possibly even passing up Eggman. Yet their greed to try to control Chaos Control backfired on them. Way harsher than the games. In the games, it was just a genocide on the Echindas. Yet in Archie, it destroyed their entire society, which basically split the race into 2 factions. The Coucils of Guardians and the Dark Brotherhood. The guardians hated tech, as they believed that it tech the incited Chaos's wrath on them. The brotherhood, wanted to reclaim their old ways, with tech. Bada Bing Bada Boom, civil war happens. Locke, seeing no other options to stop the fighting. As at this time, the Dingos were invading. Which is how Angel Island came to be. To just run from the Dingos and keep the Master Emerald for safety. So Locke, with his 'infinite' wisdom. (I don't think Locke was a good father for this.) Locke took the egg of his newborn son, and messed his genetics and exposed him to Chaos Control Powers. Which supercharged Knuckles into growing his spikes. Yea, in Archie, his spikes are real and all other Echinda spikes are fake or for decoration. Locke raises Knuckles in isolation, for the sole purpose of making him the best guardian with no reason to disobey orders. (Locke was trying to turn his son into a solider, and was really trying to control his son, rather love and care for him.) So, in Archie's Sonic, there are other Echindas, there are few. Like less than 1,000. Basically near extinction, and the many attacks and invasion they faced, its a miracle how they even kept Angel Island for as long as they did.
