**Alimony** is a legal obligation on a person to provide financial support to their SPOUSE before or after marital separation or divorce. The justification behind it is to lower the financial burden of someone who wants to leave a bad marriage. Since a child is an otherwise helpless person, the law tends to favor their interests over their parents, assuming one parent must offer time, and the other money to keep the baby's life stable.
