@lancehedrey It's never been explicitly stated why. Iirc the popular fan theory is that Kivotos is some form of purgatory, students are old/forgotten deities or some form of their incarnations, and the schools are the pantheons, since there's religious symbolism sprinkled all over the place ingame. Like Nerfa said, the characters' resistance to damage is tied to their halos in some way, and destroying one's halo seems to be one of the few ways to actually kill a denizen of Kivotos.
