Ai translation tools have always been around though? DeepL for e.g is a neural machine translation tool and that was launched 2017 (way before ChatGPT was even a thing)

It seems like the AI hype train has made people become more aware of machine translation tools and that's gotten people into self publishing their translations for fun.

Honestly, I'm not sure that this was done by MTL, or deserves the Rough Translation tag. A number of uploads have been given the tag unjustly recently, and because the uploader has not indicated (which tag rules currently state they NEED to if they were the ones to apply it), I'm wondering if it's someone on the whitelist abusing their power. Because, unless the rules have changed somewhere beyond the wiki, people on the whitelist *still need to leave a comment detailing why they applied the Rough Translation tag*. I'm going to take a look at the actual translation quality tomorrow because the worst thing I can say about this upload at first glance is just some uneven text boxes.

it's impossible for a user aside from the uploader to apply the rough tl tag without leaving a comment fyi. there's no foul play, it's just deliberate or unintentional ignorance on the uploader's part

idk if you've had a chance to look at the tl yet but you'll find some hallmarks of mtl scanlation like trouble with determining subjects/objects, parsing context, parsing multiline bubbles, parsing handwriting, differentiating sfx from speech, and poor typesetting which you already noticed. some lines are also typeset in the wrong bubbles but the text in the expected bubbles is rewritten, so there's possibly some human error involved too
