That kind of compression wouldn't work on colored jpg images or gradients. Instead, it would ruin the quality and even increase the file size in some cases.
Like what those dumbasses did to the cover. Originally 1,67mb jpg turned into 2,95mb png. On top of all the original jpeg 92 compression artifacts they added loss of color from png compression and bloated the file size.
