I was watching Brandon Sanderson's lectures from 2025 on creative writing, and he explained this exact scenario as a common problem in a story structure.
Basically, any author has the power to progress their plot as fast as they like at any point. For example, J. R. R. Tolkien could write after the Council of Elrond: "and then, after one year, Frodo tossed the ring into the depths of Mt. Orodruin, destroying it. The end". But there would be no payoff for that story. You would fell robbed: "Why would you lay down all of that groundwork, write out your characters, if you decided to end your story LIKE THAT?"
So every time any author skips a big chunk of time, they "cheat" a little. If it's done wrong, they might turn away their audience from their work. But with proper explanation or good preparation it can smooth out boring parts, save them a lot of time and writing efforts.
