Hoshi regretting the happy future he abandoned for a chance at a job that is ultimately making him miserable and Sumi visibly ragged from the life of promiscuity she found herself in after allowing herself to be tricked by enough scumbags she crossed paths with in search of a relationship to make her forget Hoshi.

It seems at the end that, while still broken hearted by the reveal, he nearly blocks her contact, hesitates, the sunrise gives him the hope and resolution to not press the button and decides to quit his distant job, signaling that maybe this wasn't a mistake but a second chance. They're both still very young adults, prefrontal cortex about to finish developing. They can salvage this and save each other.

Really looking forward to a translation of this one for aditional nuance.

I think it's just the classic post-highschool-grad separation due to the distance caused by the "leaving hometown to study/work at a more prestitious urban area for your future's sake" pipeline.
