I think she just stays inside so she doesn't inadvertently hurt/kill men. It seems Rei, a healthy young man, was adversely affected just by having her come close to him for the first time so its unlikely she could live near men for any length of time without causing problems for them.

No idea what Milleva's backstory is that makes her not want to hurt humans, but the one maid we see has pointy ears so she's presumably not a human woman either.
