are you using it for whole phrases/pages or using it as a dictionary to look up single characters and figure out what meaning they have in the current context, like a dictionary? one is mtl the other is not really

I transcribe the whole original text, put it page by page into DeepL (even if I know the translation), to check how it would translate it.
Then I put most lines also into jisho to check for alternate translations for certain words, which could be more fitting and in the end I land somewhere in the middle with my own wording.
That should count as rough translation, in my opinion.

and then we have this dude, translating shit himself, using machine to compare with his own, then he use a second one for cross-references, and then put the "Rough Translation" despite having done most of the work himself and only using MTL to make sure it's correct.

@menospeaknihongo That's exactly how I translate too or at least how I've been doing it for years, I don't think that counts as MTL as you're just double checking your stuff, as long as you are translating everything yourself with your own knowledge (and provided that your knowledge is sufficient to do so) then it's not MTL or a rough translation imo, unless you couldn't really translate most of the stuff just bits and pieces and left almost everything else up to DeepL etc.
