Feels like the artist really wants nerds like me to get angry and it's working because story-wise and character wise, Shinji doesn't fit the trope. As an average person, Shinji would be considered fairly up there in life if he wasn't born as part of the Matou, but precisely because he was born in that family along with being completely unable to use magic, he's conceited to the point of delusion until Sakura gets adopted. That's where he becomes..well, Shinji. Even at the point when things kick off in F/SN, Shinji isn't threatening. He whines and throws tantrums when things don't go his way, and the parts where he actually is a threat are all parts where Sakura is involved because he knows exactly how to make Sakura do what he wants until...well yeah.

As for why he doesn't fit the NTR trope, a general story trope that I see in NTR is that the guy stealing the girls has to be superior to the protag, sometimes it can be as simple as "dick big" but in F/SN's case, where all three routes show how desperate Shinji is to show superiority and failing at it...it's hard to imagine him as someone that can cause anyone to fall in love with him to the point of cheating even if the reason is "lmao dick big".

Zouken, Hercules, Kotomine, and Gilgamesh would have been better but considering their personalities and lore...I guess it'd depend on the artist on how brutal they'd want it to be. I mean, Illya's been known to keep the consciousness of Shirou stuck in a doll forever in one bad end too so...It just feels like a waste and a cop-out to use Shinji as the guy stealing lovers from Shirou. A waste because Shinji is too pathetic in F/SN and a cop-out because of how much more brutal other characters can be in comparison to Shinji.

tl;dr Shinji is too weak for the NTR role.

EDIT: EVEN CASTER WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER.
