Okay, I finally figured out why I have such mixed feelings about this doujin, because I SHOULD love it - Bukatsu's a great artist and the story ticks a ton of my favorite boxes.

But why did the father not even TRY to contact his son and apologize? If he really regretted things, shouldn't he have at least tried that once in, what, 20+ years? Even if his son didn't forgive him, his son would at least know that his father didn't hate him. And his new wife COULD have tried to push the father or even reach out to the son directly. It just feels like she was kinda complicit.

Of the original family, the father (the person who deserved the least support / was most culpable) got support that his son, who was a victim in the whole thing, never got. Hell, the only reason his son ever got the emotional support of his new mother is because his father died, so the son spent DECADES of his life alone and thinking his father hated him because his father couldn't pick up the phone. Yet the father, who both started this whole enchilada and was too boneheaded to even try to stop it, was "prioritized" by fate, in a sense. Honestly, that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I mean, all's well that ends well. I guess.

One explanation might be "the story doesn't work if the father called and resolved things with his son", but it'd be well within the son's character to just not answer his father. One single throwaway line like "he wrote to me and said he was sorry and didn't hate me, but I didn't answer him since he was already a stranger to me" would fix that.

(If anyone's reading this and thinking that my mixed feelings might be related to some unresolved issues - how'd you guess?)
