The reason for the massive backlash is mostly because most people don't like old men tag, and also because the mom is fan favorite because Pepper puts a lot of attention to her stories rather than the sister/dad/aunt.

That's just my take on it, I would be interested to see this story develop further, but only if it sticks to the people who are actually blood related, not some far of relative group railying the mom like one person was asking in the fanbox.
