This is my first translated work!

I took a few years of Japanese in college but I decided that it might be a good time for me to put some of that into practice by putting out translations of my favorite stories that are old and for some reason or another, haven't been touched by other translators.

I definitely welcome constructive criticism on the translation, though there were a few lines where I purposefully took a couple of liberties with the accuracy just to make it smuttier.

As I'll be translating a few more stories centered around feminization, I'm asking this community to see how I should translate "男の娘" in the future.

Traditionally, I feel like the most common translation is "trap." However, some folks seem to take offense to that term and I see more people are veering more towards "femboy." There are also other English translations like "sissy," "crossdresser," or "tomgirl."

For this work, I used "sissy trap" because that's the term that I identify with and turns me on the most, but I'd be interested to see if that worked or if anybody has a strong argument for or against a particular term.

I think femboy may be the preferred term in real life, but as far as searching here goes, tomgirl is apparently the tag used for categorization. Sissy is also used in porn commonly, though that specifically denotes a desire to be heavily sexualized as well. To add to this, trans women are generally biologically male, but prefer to be viewed as women (which I think makes them women since they should be whatever they want to be), and over-sexualized a person without their consent is a little weird. That said, this is fantasy drawings and writing, so personally I take these distinctions with a grain of salt.

Shit can be complicated if you want to make it so, and sometimes this can be fun in different ways to tell a story, though often those who lead lives like this are targeted for harassment or violence, leading to trauma and mental health issues.

Trap is often used broadly for anyone in these categories, but is generally considered offensive since many folks attribute its meaning as “trapping” another man through deceit, which realistically would be insanely unsafe for this theoretical deceiver.

I think that if you respect someone as a human being, you would use the term(s) that they prefer. Not like it affects anyone else, IMO.

As a trans person I tend not to be bothered by any of the terms being used in porn (not irl scenarios) as long as they aren't ment in an offensive way. I understand language has evolved and the tagging system is old and not descriptive enough also. I see it as trap/tomgirl are kinda the same but maybe trap is a little more sexualized but I always took traps as people who didn't identify as female but still wanted to dress like them, like a crossdresser. Sissy is for full sexualization. Id write more but at this point im rambling, language is confusing and was never my strong point. Tldr as long as you aren't trying to be an ass I tend not to care and ill think you'll find most people won't either.

I like to sometimes just keep the romanization for special japanese terms. Otokonoko's early translation was "Girlyboy" and then "Trap" and finally "Femboy". I stuck with Girlyboy.
"Trap" is not good because it carries an English implication that shouldn't be there. And also "Trans-girl". Otokonokos are not Trans-girls, although hentai artists are all over the place with their idea of what otokonokos is. m:tomgirl is a e-hentai only tag, "otokonoko" and "femboy" are all are slaved to it anyway.
This is like the problem with メス堕ち/Mesuochi. There just isn't a good way to translate it properly.The best and most direct translation of Mesuochi was "Sissyfication" but it's very old-fashioned and feels like 80s porn. The Japanese use of Bitch too is not directly how its used in English, a japanese "bitch" is sex addicted slut. So it's like "Mesuochi" is turning a someone into Sex addicted female Bitch. Same with "Meat Urinals"/肉便器, sometimes its better to dump the original and go for something already in English like "Cumdump" which is far better.

Thanks for the thoughtful responses! I think the early consensus is that the use of "trap" in real life is damaging, but people tend to care a lot less when it's in porn.

I totally agree. For instance, I did put some thought initially as to whether to translate "sempai" into "senior" but I figured that most people would understand and even prefer "sempai." Not sure if Otokonoko rises quite to that level overall, but I think fans will be familiar. With "Meat Urinals"/肉便器, it came up twice in this work. I used "whore" for the first instance and "cumdump" for the second instance. I think both connote a sense of "object for sexual gratification" but "whore" much, MUCH less so than "cumdump." Even so, I used both terms because I wanted to escalate the language throughout the work to illustrate Kana's own descent. For メス堕ち/Mesuochi, it didn't come up here but I was planning on either "feminization," or using more colorful but wordy language like "falling into a depraved cock-addicted slut," but yeah, there really isn't an easy translation.

This particular work was originally posted back in 2017 but has gone untranslated this whole time. My goal is to take some of these older works that have been somewhat forgotten and finally translate them!

My two cents are that I agree with your post above me, I feel like if you're searching out this sort of stuff, you probably know what an "otokonoko" is, if only because some boorus still carry the tag. This isn't like someone translating an episode of MHA and using "senior" instead of "sempai" because it's very reasonable for the viewer to not know what the fuck it is. If you know how to get past the panda AND you're searching for feminization porn, if you don't know "otokonoko" yet there's no better time to learn. If it absolutely must be translated, I'd say to just follow your dick, which is exactly what you seemed to do lol. Porn is porn, not real life, so whatever gets you there is what I always say.

If you want a more (anecdotal) "data" driven answer, as someone who inhales this sort of content, trap is easily the most common translation, especially these days. I've seen meat toilet/urinal used a number of times, but cumdump (and similar, eg dick receptacle) are also very common, I think any and all could be used without ruffling any feathers. "Meat toilet" is largely used by the more hardcore stuff (it does sound kinda gross, after all) so it might be a little context dependent, if you want to be pedantic. And yeah feminization is your best bet and one I see the most as a single word, sissyification feels a lot more specific and you don't see it as much because of it.

If you want a good comparison, you could compare translations of Wataya's stuff to the originals, the official TL is pretty good and they're long CG sets so there's a lot to digest.
