If you used MTL like you did for Arakure’s doujin, I think you should mention it in the gallery description and add [MTL] to the gallery title. Otherwise, people might assume you translated it yourself.

Also, Comoop has already made a translation script in his Script Cave discord. The only issue is that nobody has had the time to typeset it. So rather than relying on MTL, I’d suggest you work as a typesetter and use Comoop’s scripts. Here's the invite link to Script Cave discord server:

The reason I don’t put [MTL] in the title is because I didn’t want people to judge the release before even reading it. You probably know yourself how most galleries with [MTL] in the title turn out - they usually mean:
- Automated inpainting: random details on the page get erased.
- Automated translation: straight raw output with no cleanup, weird tense, wrong speakers, etc.
- Little/No/Bad proofreading: leading to awkward phrasing and clunky sentences.
- Bizarre choice for fonts.

I don’t do any of that. The only “automated” part of my process is what I’d call a second-pass mass translation of the lines. Here's my process:

1. OCR everything manually. Auto-OCR always messes something up, and scouring back through all the lines to look for mistakes is more annoying than just doing it manually.
2. Run the lines through Google Translate / DeepL to get the gist of the story and who’s saying what.
3. Write a full script with speaker names and some scene context.
4. Run that script through GPT, asking it for both a natural and literal version of each line.
5. Inpaint all dialogue (except stylized text).
6. Apply the lines one by one, choosing literal, natural, or a tweaked mix of both depending on what reads/fits best. I even have Jparser up during this so I can read key words/phrases of the line.

For private stuff I don’t release, this is where I usually stop - I don’t bother with stylized text since I can read hiragana/katakana, and I can read most moans and generic lines (“I’m cumming!!” etc.). This part is pretty quick. For this release, I think it took me around 3-5 hours. Wasn't exactly tracking time taken, and I didn't do it in one go.

For anything I do release here, I make sure to at least handle moans and some SFX (especially on pages I like or where it matters), and then proofread multiple times. For this one in particular, I even cross-checked some of the trickier sections with other language translations to make sure I didn’t miss any nuance. I also fed the entire script back into GPT, alongside my finalised lines, as a sort of 'marking' process, to fine-tune everything. This part took significantly longer than above.

I wasn’t aware of that Discord with English scripts - I gave that script a read and... I prefer mine, for the most part. Not that his is wrong or bad, I just like the way I worded certain sentences, although he has a couple I think I like better (would need to see how it fits), but it's too late now. Honestly though, half the fun for me is the discovery part, piecing together the meaning and nuance as I go. But the next time I want to TL something, I’ll check that Discord first.

Moving forward, I’ll start putting [MTL] in my titles. I don’t like being lumped in with all the baggage attached to that tag, but I also don’t want to do a disservice to actual translators who are fluent in both languages... and I’ve realized the people I thought might give it a chance because it’s a well-made MTL are never going to read it anyway, so this would be a win-win.

Apologies to anyone who thought this was a non-MTL release.

I’m glad you’re being honest. Knowing how to read hiragana and katakana is already a great first step, but I hope you won’t rely too much on MTL and instead put effort into actually studying Japanese.
Using tools like OCR to read difficult kanji and a dictionary like Jisho to understand their meanings is totally fine. In fact, it’s a great way to build a personalized Anki deck for kanji study. I also recommend reading Tae Kim’s Grammar Guide. Once you’re familiar with how the grammar is structured, try challenging yourself to understand dialogue directly from the Japanese scripts you have. I think you’ll find it much more rewarding than just putting the script into MTL and fine-tuning it.

And if you’re looking to connect with some of the best translators on this site, I suggest checking out the Head Empty Discord. They’ll ask you a few questions first, just be honest and say you’re a typesetter who’s still learning Japanese. I think they won’t be too harsh on people who want to learn and put in the effort.

The reason I even started translating was because I suddenly lost interest in a long-term hobby of mine, so now I’ve got hours every day where I’m just bored. Doing this has basically been a partial replacement for that. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve got it in me to really learn Japanese. I wouldn’t use it in any other part of my life, and for me, the process of studying would just feel boring compared to the fun of messing around with MTL on hentai doujins.

I also had a look at that Discord, but it seemed a bit too cliquey/elitist for me.

I dunno, I’ve never dropped a 10-year hobby before, so I don’t even know where my head will be in a month.

If I keep doing this, I’ll probably just hit up the Comoop guy for proofreading or something. And if he can’t or won’t, then I’ll just throw on the MTL tag.

Thanks for the responses, though. I’ll definitely keep your suggestions in mind if I do decide to go down the “learn Japanese” route.

Just be aware that you’ll eventually end up “sniping” other groups. If you want to MTL galleries that other human translators won’t touch, you should look for artists whose works have been licensed by Irodori or Fakku. Fan translators avoid those because they’ll get DMCA’d by Irodori/Fakku, and they don’t want their efforts to go to waste. Just make sure to include a link to the original doujin on the credit page (and be honest that you MTL’d it), so people buy it directly from the artist instead of through Irodori.

It’s not like I condone MTL, but Irodori’s DMCA is just as big of a problem on this site. It’d be pretty funny if they ended up getting sniped by MTL.

There's no plot hole here. They both knew each other since childhood, but they were never a couple in their school days. Husband only had a one-sided crush, perhaps because he was super shy, and only stalked Koharu. Koharu, on the other hand, started dating the library boy. Probably because they had a hobby in common, books (She reading Shakespeare on the train, and the other boy wearing glasses and running into her at the Library).
