For years, I was curious how くちなわのリング might eventually be translated in Kaede’s story. Using くちなわ instead of ヘビ works really well for describing that ‘rotten’ feeling to Kaede, but it really only works in Japanese. How do you even begin translating it to English? I think Fakku (or someone else? Don’t remember) went with Serpent’s Ring. I didn’t even consider it, but I think you made a good call by leaving that part untranslated and going with the subtitle as the title. Sometimes, it’s worth leaving a phrase untranslated so you don’t lose out on everything it implies.

(Context: Both ヘビ and くちなわ refer to snakes, but give different impressions. ヘビ is basically your default word for snake. くちなわ originated from how old, rotten ropes can look like snakes. The term for a rotten rope is 腐った縄 （くさったなわ）and can be shortened to 朽ち縄 (くちなわ). Well, people simply reverse it, taking the shortened form and calling snakes rotten ropes! That’s the term the artist used. Snake’s Ring or Serpent’s Ring are good literal translations, but we lose the implication about Kaede’s ‘rotten’ nature.)

I haven’t had the chance to read everything yet, but from what I’ve seen, this translation looks good. Well done.

Yeah Ive been interested in jp for some time and understand romaji well. So I just take help of romaji versions of the japanese texts and that helps me translating the text with better understanding and keeping the flow.
