I don't know if this is what you're referring to, but the English-translation-reading community on this site is incredibly elitist. I don't see the Chinese or Spanish translations getting rating-bombed and abuse in the comments over sub-professional work or machine-aided translations, and wonder of wonders, they get more translations, more frequently.

@Pseudo~K You get it, but this is hardly the only place I've seen it over the years. Frankly, the community reaction to a number of things leaves me scratching my head. Far too many seem to have the time and motivation to seek out and spite users who give them free porn that isn't precisely what their entitlement demands, but clearly feel zero motivation to do any actual work for themselves. (They also literally accuse you of hypocrisy if you point it out.) When I first came to e-hentai, there was a user uploading extremely low quality versions of any raw he could find that wasn't here already. I had no interest in these, but it took very little time for me to notice the score of "fans" following him around the site to harass him on every gallery. Any one of these people could have obtained, ripped, and uploaded a high quality copy of these comics from whatever site he was pulling sample versions from, but they clearly cared about something else.

As for my own translation, the tried-and-true Jeffrey's Japanese⇔English Dictionary is my go-to for pretty much anything I don't instantly understand. I may also do kanji lookups in paper dictionaries. I have both the Tuttle Spahn/Hadamitzky one, which I've owned far longer and tend to favor, and the Kodansha Kanji Dictionary. Occasionally I may search a phrase on the internet to get a better feel for how people actually use it. In extremely rare cases (maybe one line every hundred to hundred-fifty pages of comic) I might throw a snippet into google translate to see if it gives me something not-entirely-garbage for more ideas on how to make things work in English (sometimes it will surprise me in the good way instead of the comical one). Naturally this method results in constant accusations of MTL-ing everything or creating a "rewrite" (e.g. my previous gallery, which I'm quite confident earned the label "rewrite" because that word appears in an entirely different context in the translation notes, which I happened to leave as the first page because I was in a hurry when uploading it).

I should also add that editing things myself seems to take between ten and twenty-five times as long as translating (usually nearer the high end of that range). I had one recent (and very short) project that somehow worked out to slightly more than double. For some reason the arrangement of the raw seemed to allow English text to fall neatly into place with minimal effort.

FURTHER EDIT: I can't be the only one who thinks it's silly to whine about how an existing machine translation means no "proper" translation will ever exist while doing everything you possibly can to harry and demotivate anyone you haven't already selected for that process. A few of my translations are deliberate reworks of things that already existed in English (including MTL). You might say that was in spite of the community's "encouragement." I also inadvertently translated some things that already had English versions. If my previous gallery is any indication, my "rewrite" certainly did a better job of it. (See comments there. If nothing else, I hope they make you laugh as much as I did.)

Honestly, I doubt I'll ever share another translation anywhere. My recent uploads are items I already translated and just never bothered to add to e-hentai before now. Simple image editing eats up an absurd amount of time, and it's just work (I get no value out of). Apart from porn, my own use of the Japanese language is pretty much a matter of reading comics. I wouldn't offer to translate legal documents or trade contracts, but I've translated doujins without pausing to look up a single thing a fair number of times. I don't feel any need to read others' English versions unless I can't find a raw. Translating was just a way I could offer to share my enjoyment with others, and frankly the killjoys sucked the life out of that long before I even started talking about quitting it.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm no translator myself, but it bothers me that people are so hostile to any translators who aren't established and professional quality. Every time I see something posted with a "this is my first translation" note, it gets rated down and a bunch of people telling them to KYS in the comments. They don't realize that everyone has to start somewhere, and the only way to get experienced and skilled translators is to encourage new and unskilled ones to keep going.

Also, just to stick my neck out even further, I don't have a problem with MTL-aided translations. Sure, some of them are really bad, but most of them are readable if awkward, and even the bad ones make it easier for some editor or native speaker to go in and do a better job down the line. I've seen tons of things here and on other sites get a low-quality MTL which receives a bunch of vitriol and people saying "Now it'll never be done properly!", then later it gets a very nice manual translation. Some of these things went untranslated at all for YEARS - then once they got a MTL they got a "proper" translation within two months.

"Hostile" is definitely a good word for it. From what I've seen people supposedly hate MTL because it's inaccurate. On the surface, this is definitely a point I can't argue against (it's usually pretty bad at representing the original author's intent), but the people making this complaint frequently point to some other thing as better even though it also makes ridiculous mistakes like assuming the wrong character is delivering a line (which tends to make writing the English a little awkward even at the best of times).

Ultimately every English version is just that. No English representation of a Japanese work will perfectly convey everything in the original to every English reader. In this comic, for example, I could not write the last page without making it more explicit than the original language. Writing it into English only becomes possible by making an assumption about what the author meant with certain things because English absolutely does not allow the sort of indeterminate, infer-from-context approach that Japanese does. I didn't lean hard into it and try to force readers to see things my way, but (as stated in translation notes) I picked a perspective and worded things based on that. I read comics in Japanese precisely because I don't want my experience filtered this way.

additional: This last paragraph also essentially explains why I put in the translation notes nobody reads.

It has very little to do with 'being elitist'.
And TBH I have no clue if this relation is accurate in the first place.
But it's certainly grating when I see blatant mistakes in translation, or text that clearly makes no sense in the context. It makes me focus on the fact that I'm reading something that had very little effort put into it, rather than the story I was trying to read.
If the 'translator' doesn't know the language he's translating *from*, he should *at least* know the language he's translating *to*, no? And at least *try* to make the text readable. Yanno, figure out what it's supposed to be saying, and change the wording to convey it in English properly? Cuz it's certainly not something that every reader should have to do individually.
Is this what you're calling 'elitist'? I'd rather call it "not wanting having to do half the translator's job because he didn't bother" instead.
(For anyone wondering: I'm not talking about any specific works or translators here, but rather my general impression; I've seen this crap going on freaking everywhere. …And English isn't even the worst offender here; I've seen non-English translations that were done *so badly*, that I had to translate them back into English word-for-word – because *of course* they were based off the English translation instead of being made directly from the source language – just to figure out what the hell was being said in the first place. Which is why I'm sticking to English translations to begin with.)

Your response is remarkably civil compared to the general attitude on this site (even after the apparent crackdown on some of the most direct attacks). I would love to see a culture where translation groups like those you mentioned are always gently and amicably directed toward helpful resources, people who can proofread for them, etc. It's OK to give up trying with people who ignore you. What's not OK is, well, what I keep seeing again and again. Advice, when I see it at all, reads like this: "I'm looking down on you like a dog turd on the sidewalk and I REALLY wish you'd do that thing I'm not going to say outright because I don't want to get in trouble and here's one link that might help you suck infinitesimally less you filthy smelly pig. Also, you really should kil- ahem (I wasn't going to say that.)" Nearly all of the reactions I see to translations seem motivated entirely by desire to hurt someone as much as possible without technically doing anything against the rules. Thank yous and friendly discussions seem reserved for raw galleries, and an alarming number of those still get the malevolent response.

While I never read them* I did notice other-language versions appearing almost immediately after some of mine. (Mostly Spanish and Korean, iirc. I don't feel like looking up anything.) When I mentioned "reworking" above, I meant a full translation directly from raw. I do things my way or not at all.

*While I may view the comments for information about the content, I don't generally look at translation galleries much beyond a quick glance at the tags/thumbs and copying the Japanese title. I mostly use their existence to spot comics and CGs I missed before. I imagine other people do this, spot MTL, and make their own version. Hence the "proper" translation shortly after an MTL appears that Pseudo~K mentioned.
