@ilookfat: I didn’t choose “she/her” based on any political view or anything like that. I simply went by the e-hentai tag, which describes “shemale” as: Girls that have male genitals but not a vagina. I took that to imply that she is treated as female. I considered leaving it as -san (neutral), but some might find that awkward. I’d appreciate your input if there’s any general consensus on pronouns for “shemale.”
Another consideration is that the title includes “shemale.” Also, my commissioner agreed with my choice and said I did a good job, and that’s ultimately what matters to me.
Lastly, I really put a lot of thought into this. If only the author had explicitly used something like “kare,” or if Mitsui had changed the way he addressed Kaname, I would have switched to he/him without a second thought. I didn’t want to directly contradict the author, and I tried my best to avoid that. I also thought about removing “miss” completely, but then there’s still the issue of her/his, so it seemed pointless.

Heck, fatso mentions dropping the honorific "san" and leave it there... but that word is still used and broadly considered as something similar to "Miss" or "Mr" just depending on who you refer to. So while the word is, in general terms, considered as just a word that indicates a level of respect towards a person, for foreign languages there IS a "translation"; so for you to genuinely look for a way to accomodate while following site rules is commendable. Specially because "Shemale" is always a complicated term to work around.
And fat, if you feel bothered by "pronouns" go read Mogiki Hayami's & TheAmanoja works. Artists like Amanoja portay a specific fantasy that will NEVER happen in real life because actual trans people have gender dysphoria which quite literally makes them uncomfortable or feel like shit/depressed to be referred to as the gender they consider themselves not to be.

Like, no kink shaming or anything but the method of "if it looks like a chick, it should be referred to as a chick" should just be a universal rule unless the author is specifically calling them something else(ala amanoja) even though it's technically problematic. Unless the crazy autist is saying we should start using they/them when pronouns aren't stated, which i HIGHLY doubt they are given what they're arguing for.

The passage quoted "女の子として活動してると都合が良いから、性別を隠してたのよ" which seems properly translated, to me just seems in line with the usual tropes for Japanese shemale porn stories; the character is actively living as a woman but acknowledges she is hiding her male gender. This one line is all that is said about the character's identity and it does not imply she identifies as male, just that she acknowledged she is hiding her gender. No gendered third person pronouns are used to refer to her, she uses 'watashi' for her first person pronoun, which is mostly favored by females but is technically gender neutral and the title of the book refers to her as a shemale, so I don't think it's some big loss of author intent to use female pronouns for the character as would be expected for a character choosing to live as a woman.

Additionally, I would say the previous shemale book from this author featured a character who was pretty clearly female identified; she used the feminine "atashi" to refer to herself, referred to herself as a newhalf, the guy used "kanojo" in relation to her (though in the sense of her as a potential girlfriend and not in the pronoun use), etc. So the assertion that nothing this "author has ever made has he ever pinned pinkpilled gender rights worldview on his characters" seems pretty nonsensical to me.
